Josephine C. Hernandez

Josephine C. Hernandez passed away July 28, 2018 at the age of 83.

Josie was born July 8, 1935 in Ben Arnold in Milam County to Domingo and Pricilla (Bernal) Coronado. Her father was a highway construction worker, while her mother took care of Josie and her four siblings. She spent her childhood working with her family.

Josie met the love of her life while working at the washateria at Texas A&M. She and Steve T. Hernandez were married on May 11, 1956. In their 62-year marriage they were blessed with two children, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She enjoyed being a homemaker and raising their children. She was especially talented at interior design, and made sure their home looked nice. Family occasions were always special to Josie, as long as they didn’t try to take her on the water. There were no ferry rides for Josie.

Josie was very crafty and could make anything out of nothing. She could be very reserved and enjoyed talking on the phone and sitting by the window watching what was going on outside. She was an avid Radio Alegria listener. She also loved to get out and go. With her bubbly and outgoing personality, she enjoyed hitting the casinos in Louisiana, especially the Coushatta. She liked the Riverwalk in San Antonio. She could be bit of a diva sometimes, and enjoyed shopping in Houston, and at Wal-Mart and Target. She did not believe in doing any work on the weekends, and she enjoyed attending Bryan Viking football games on Friday nights. She was an active parishioner at St. Theresa Catholic Church for 70+ years.

Josie is survived by her husband of 62 years, Steve Hernandez, her son and daughter-in-law Eddie and Victoria Hernandez, her daughter and son-in-law Dee Dee and PJ Vargas, her grandchildren: Celeste Hernandez, Audrey Kobina, Edward Hernandez, Desiree Carlin. Destinee Vargas, and Trey Vargas, her five great-grandchildren, her sister Olivia Aleman, her sister-in-law Margaret Coronado, and her brother and sister-in-law Angel B. Coronado Sr. and Shelia Coronado. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mary Coronado, and her brother Joe B. Coronado.

To honor Josie’s life, her family has planned a visitation for Wednesday, August 1 from 5-8 at Hillier Funeral Home of Bryan, with a rosary and memory sharing to begin at 6:30. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, August 2, 2018 at 11 AM at St. Theresa Catholic Church, with burial to be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. There will be a reception at Our Lady of Guadalupe Hall.
