Theodore Francis

Theodore Dan Francis went home to be with his Lord on Monday, June 30, 2008, in Bryan. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 3, at Hillier Funeral Home. Services are set for 10 a.m. Friday, July 4, at Cottonwood Baptist Church with burial following at Bickham Cemetery.

Dan was born on May 18, 1926, in Tabor to Bonham Nugent and Ruby Mae Locke Francis. He served as a gunner’s mate in the U.S. Navy during the latter part of World War II.

He was first married to Billie Thurman West and they had two children, Danna and Craig. In 1957, he married Tuva Vaughn Van Zandt, and they had four children, Theresa Mae, Theodore Dan Jr., Tamarie and Stanley Fred.

Dan worked as a warehouse supervisor for Otis Engineering in Dallas until his retirement in 1980, when he returned to the Bryan area and started Metroplex Delivery Hot Shot Service.  He was diagnosed with cancer in 1991 and won the battle after chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Dan and Tuva retired to their farm in Tabor, where he remained a gentleman farmer who loved to have all his family coming home. He had a strong will to live which he maintained up until the end. He was a fun dad, grandfather and “supervisor” who made us laugh.

Dan was a lifelong member of Cottonwood Baptist Church in Tabor, a member of the Masonic Lodge Cedar Creek No. 300 in Kurten for more than 50 years and the American Legion Post No. 158.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lawrence, Ross, Billie and Bruce; sister, Bonnie Durden; stepson, Gary Don West; daughter, Theresa Francis; and son, Craig Francis.

Survivors include his devoted wife of more than 50 years, Tuva; sister, Betty Joyce Hatcher; sister-in-law, Raye Francis; stepson, the Rev. Jay Van Zandt and wife, Vicky; sons and daughters-in-law, Ted and Marcy and Stan and Linda; daughters and sons-in-law, Danna and Jerry Lovelace and Tami and Byron Neal; granddaughters, Lisa Mallewick Halbert, Heather West Haywood, Stacy Lee Francis, Veronica Jaye Van Zandt, Katherine Marie Francis and Courtney Danielle Francis; many nieces and nephews, friends and other family to numerous to count.
