Sondra "Sandy" Smith

December 1, 1941 — June 2, 0023

Sondra “Sandy” Smith passed away in her sleep on June 9, 2023. She joins her parents, Roland and Gertrude Lord, and her husband, Dr. James C. Smith, in the loving care of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Born in Upland, Pennsylvania and raised on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Sondra was the quintessential “farm girl.” Working on her family farm as soon as she could walk, she developed a love for horses and the outdoors and learned the value of hard work. Her childhood was busy and full of activities from being an officer in the 4H, a volunteer at her church, and a multiple sport athlete in high school.

In 1961, Sandy married James “Jim” Smith in Federalsburg, Maryland which marked the beginning of a fifty-four-year journey that took them around the world. Her life as a daughter, wife, and mother was one of constant service to others. Over the next few decades, Sandy filled many roles of service for her family and community as a Sunday school teacher, soccer coach, PTA officer, Cub Scout leader, and volunteer at her church.  She raised three sons, Chuck, Scott, and Randy, and a daughter, Jennifer, with her beloved husband Jim. Sandy lived the life of a simple farm girl who was called to do great things in support of others. She moved her family over ten times, she worked, taught, and volunteered at multiple Methodist churches around the country, and played host to senators and world leaders alongside Jim.

Sondra shared her husband’s love of all things Texas A&M and Aggie. They moved to College Station in the late 1960s and she jumped right into serving the community; even taking courses at the University where the “battle-hardened” mom and wife studied alongside Aggie football players. Upon return to College Station thirty years later, Sandy and Jim continued where they left off, getting involved with Christ United Methodist Church while the church was still meeting at a school.  Sandy enjoyed many Aggie football, baseball, and basketball games with friends and family.

Sondra was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James C. Smith. She is survived by their four children, Chuck, Scott, Randy, and Jennifer; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
