Sidney (Buchanan) Charlton

April 4, 1933 — April 9, 2023

Sidney (Buchanan) Charlton, born April 4, 1933, passed away April 9, 2023, days after her 90th birthday.

As a young child, Sidney’s family moved from Seale, Texas to Houston in the Heights, where she graduated from Reagan High School. As a child, she hated picking cotton, but as a young adult, she danced the Cha Cha around the swimming pool at the opening of the famous Shamrock Hotel in Houston.

She met her late husband, Travis “Bud” Charlton, at the roller rink in Hearne, Texas. He was in the Air Force when they married and soon moved to his new station in California. They enjoyed being young, married, and living the life of Californians.

An elegant, courageous, and generous person, Sidney loved making peanut brittle and Kendle’s favorite “green stuff” for Christmas, trying new restaurants, reading, and playing Bunco. She loved traveling with her sisters, Betty and Bonnie, to places including New York, Arizona, Arkansas, Nevada, Mississippi, and more. She retired in 1999 as a benefits manager for Pennzoil in downtown Houston. Upon moving to College Station, she became an Aggie fan and planted a flag in her yard to show support.

Sidney loved her grandchildren and family; her face lit up when they visited. She greeted everyone with a “How do?” and was known for giving honest advice with much love. She loved having the extended family together for Thanksgiving dinners and taking the grandkids to Vacation Bible School, swimming, and to the movies with her giant purse filled with microwave popcorn. She would remind everyone to not be a litter bug, to always walk facing the traffic, not to worry too much, and to “put it in God’s hands.”

A member of Christ Methodist Church in College Station, her faith was strong and unwavering because she believed that God had a plan. Her Bible was always on the coffee table because she read and studied it daily. Sidney delivered for Meals on Wheels and volunteered at Scott and White Hospital, Crestview Nursing Facility, and at Vacation Bible School. She was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, an “Elkadette, a female member of the Elks club and she marched in their parade while beating a bass drum.

She has been reunited with her husband, Travis “Bud” Charlton; parents, R.W. and Tina Buchanan; brother, “Buster” Buchanan; and sister, Pearl Ann Buchanan.

Sidney is survived by her children and their spouses, Troy Charlton (Shelly) and Caron Colburn (Edward); grandchildren, Clint Charlton, Logan Cates (Whitney), Kendle Gonzales (Chris), Kori Sullivan (Colten), and Trey Cates (Destiny); great grandchildren, Emma Gonzales, Carson Gonzales, and Bryer Sullivan; and siblings, Yvonne Blair, Betty Cowart (Gene), and Ruth Schulte.

The family is extremely grateful for the help and kindness of Hospice Brazos Valley team, especially MIcki, Tyler, Ashley, and Mark and the staff at Sodalis Assisted Living, but most importantly, Aunt Betty, because we couldn’t have made it without you!

In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored for you to donate in Sidney’s name to your favorite charity.
