Shelby Metcalf, Jr.
1930 ~ 2007
Shelby R. Metcalf, age 76 of Bryan, passed away Thursday, February 8, 2007 in the College Station Medical Center. Mr. Metcalf was born December 23, 1930 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
He moved from Germany to Bryan in 1958 and retired from Texas A&M University as the winningest basketball coach in Southwest Conference history. He coached the Aggies for 26 ½ seasons. He valued education and demonstrated by example.
He will be remembered by many for his dry humor and quick wit. Shelby Metcalf also had a passion for his grandchildren and enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his wife Janis Metcalf of Bryan; a daughter and son-in-law Shelley & Jack Valerius of College Station; and twin grandchildren Matt and Katy Valerius.
A celebration of his life will be held at 1pm Monday, February 12, 2007 at First United Methodist Church of Bryan with Reverends Matt Idom and Carroll Fancher officiating. Interment will follow at Bryan City Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 4-7pm Sunday, February 11, 2007 at Hillier Funeral Home and from noon-1pm Monday at the church.
