Sharon Howard Barrington

Sharon Howard Barrington, wife, mother, daughter and sister, passed away after a valiant battle with cancer on May 14, 2018, at the age of 77.

Sharon was born in El Paso, Texas on November 16, 1940 to Elbert and Sarah Howard. Her father worked in the petrochemical industry, while her mother took care of the home. Sharon moved with her parents, brother Dinky and sister Judith to Texas City, Texas where she spent her childhood years beating the Texas summer heat with ice cream from the Terrace and walks along the dyke. Sharon was extremely active throughout her teen years as a majorette in band and in archery. After graduating from high school in Texas City, Sharon went on to get her associates degree in nursing from Lamar University.

It was while she was still in high school that Sharon met the love of her life, her ‘sweet’ William Jerry Barrington. The two married on April 13, 1963 and were blessed with 55 years of marriage. She had three sons: Bill, Kyle, and Lance, who became the center of her life. One of her sons had medical issues, and as a result, Sharon became a fierce fighter for educational reform. Although small in stature, she proved the adage that “it’s not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog” and fought for the best for her family. Sharon juggled her dual roles of homemaker and nurse, and was equally proud of both. During her time as nurse, she looked forward to her shifts spent in labor and delivery. Seeing the new life fostered her belief in a better tomorrow. Her love of helping others inspired one of her sons to pursue a similar degree. Together with her husband, Sharon lived in Nederland, Texas, twice, Memphis, Tennessee, Wilmington, Delaware, and Clear Lake, Texas before retiring to College Station.

In her free time, Sharon was a voracious reader. She often completed an entire book in one night. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and family gatherings were very important to her life. She took many memorable trips with her family to Galveston, the Smoky Mountains, New York City, and Graceland. Sharon loved arts and crafts and was an accomplished gift wrapper. Her packages were so pretty that her family had to be extra careful when they opened them, which is no small feat since she had three sons. She loved animals and enjoyed spending time with Tuff, Misty, and Cartier. All three shared the same spirit as Sharon, “small in stature but big in heart.”

Sharon will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 55 years, William Jerry and her children, William Travis [Kristin], and Kyle David [Beth]. Sharon will be fondly remembered by her six grandchildren, Sara, Hunter, Travis, Kathryn, Meghan, and Anna, and by her sister, Judith. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Sarah Howard, and by her youngest son, Lance Howard.

To honor Sharon’s life, a graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, on Saturday, May 18, 2018 at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches, Texas. Memorial donations in Sharon’s memory may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley at 502 W. 26th St., Bryan, Texas 77803
