Ruth Erin Neeley Lewis
1919 – 2007

Ruth Erin Neeley Lewis was born on March 17, 1919 in Yoakum, Texas to her parents, Amy Barron Neeley and William Edgar Neeley.  Her family moved to Bryan while she was an infant.  She attended Bryan schools and graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1936.  She graduated from Texas Woman’s University with a degree in Speech in 1940.  Later she received a Masters degree in English from the University of Maryland.  Ruth married Charles Franklin Lewis on August 27, 1944 in Washington, D.C.  Following World War II, Ruth and her family lived in College Station, Texas and later in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Ruth taught English in Bryan and Montgomery County, Maryland until she retired in 1977.  Her husband retired in 1979, and the family moved back to Bryan.

Ruth was a life long member of the First United Methodist Church in Bryan and the Neighborly Sunday School Class.  She was member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and the Woman’s Club.

She is survived by her husband Charles Lewis, two sons: Neeley C. Lewis and his wife Rebecca, Stuart F. Lewis and his wife Darlene, both of College Station; four grandchildren: Stuart Barron Lewis and his wife Autumn, Rachel Moore and her husband Casey, Philip Lewis and Patrick Lewis; four great-grandchildren: Lauren Moore, Luke Moore, Grace Lewis and Graham Lewis; two sisters: Maurine Banks Hill of Bryan and Bonnie Mary Grinstead of Los Angeles, California, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 3p.m., Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church of Bryan with Reverend Matt Idom officiating.  Interment will follow at  Bryan City Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 5-7p.m. this evening, at Hillier Funeral Home and from 2-3pm Tuesday at the church.
