Dr. Qinglei Li, of College Station, Texas, passed away unexpectedly on April 1, 2024.
Dr. Li was born in 1970 in Shandong, China. He earned a medical degree from Binzhou Medical College and a Master’s degree and PhD from Harbin Medical University. He then completed postdoctoral fellowships at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Michigan State University, and Baylor College of Medicine.
In 2011, Dr. Li came to Texas A&M University as an assistant professor in the Department of Veterinary Integrative Biosciences. He rose through the ranks, becoming a full professor in 2023. His research, which used a multipronged approach to help understand key aspects of normal reproduction, had important implications for both animal and human health. Of note, he was a member of the National Institutes of Health Cellular, Molecular, and Integrative Reproduction study section and an associate editor of the journal, Molecular Human Reproduction. Over the summers, he worked on grants with the AgriLife department at A&M. He was known as an exceptionally careful, rigorous, and thoughtful researcher and as an excellent colleague and mentor.
Dr. Li married Hong Li in 1999. They had two daughters, Maggie and Mathea Li. Associates describe Dr. Li as having been highly devoted to and very proud of his family. They note the deep gratitude with which he spoke of his wife and of the supportive home environment she provided.
Although Dr. Li focused mainly on work and family, he did have amateur radio as a hobby. As a child, he even built a radio in his room. Later, he continually added to his radio collection. He enjoyed tinkering with electrical components in his free time and always loved little electronics.
Dr. Li was preceded in death by his parents, Xiangsan Li and Junlan Du. He is survived by his wife and daughters:and siblings: older brother Qingchun Li, older sisters Qingjing Li and Qingwen Li, and younger sister Qingfeng Li.
Dr. Li also leaves behind many colleagues and trainees who will long remember his intelligence, supportiveness, and dedication. He was always very organized, ambitious, and kind to those around him. He never missed an opportunity to help his colleagues, his PhD students, and members of his community.
