Milton McDaniel

Dr. Milton Edward McDaniel
1938-2006

Milton McDaniel passed away on November 13 after a lengthy illness.  He was born near Brinkman, Oklahoma, on January 17, 1938, to Carl and Elba McDaniel.  He grew up in Brinkman and went on to graduate from Oklahoma State University. While there he was an ASA International Crop Judging Champion.  After OSU, he began graduate training on an NDEA Fellowship at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and received a PhD in 1965.  He came to TAMU in 1965 as an Assistant Professor working as a small grain breeder.  Although he was part of the university’s wheat breeding program, he became most widely known as an oat breeder.  He later developed an oat variety that was highly resistant to crown rust, an ongoing threat to oat crops in Texas.  These resistant lines were widely grown across Texas, the southern U.S., and crossed upon by oat breeders around the world.  Because of his success, he was employed as a consultant with Quaker Oats Company and traveled annually to several countries in South America.  Dr. McDaniel received the American Oat Workers Distinguished Career Award and the Southern Small Grain Workers Outstanding Career Award.  He was elected to membership in Sigma Xi, Alpha Zeta, ASA, CSSA, and other professional societies.  He was also an associate editor for “Crop Science” Journal.

Milton is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Carolyn Rowe McDaniel; one son Thomas Edward McDaniel, Dallas, a sister; Carlene Flowers and husband Tony, Orlando, Florida; a beloved step mother, Inez McDaniel of Siloam Springs, AR; step brother Charles Leonard and wife Barbara, and several nephews and nieces of Siloam, Arkansas.  Milton had great affection for Robert and Stephanie Pope and little Evan of Bryan and thought of them as part of his family.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Elba McDaniel and nephew Robert Flowers.

Milton or “Mac”, as he was affectionately known, was an outgoing person, one committed to his God and a faithful member of Christ United Methodist Church, were he sang in the choir and shared his talents on the piano when he was able.  He always had a great love of music.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00p.m. on Thursday, November 16th at Hillier Funeral Home at 2301 East 29th Street in Bryan.  The funeral will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, November 17, at Christ United Methodist Church, 4201 St. Highway 6 South, College Station.  Services will be conducted by Rev. Jerry House and Rev. Guy Pry.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial may be sent to Christ United Methodist Church Building Fund or the Choir Fund, 4201 State Highway 6 South, College Station, Texas  77845
