Melvin “Mel” Thomas Wood, 66, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 28, 2008. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, at Hillier Funeral Home. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday, July 3, at Central Baptist Church in College Station with the Rev. Clinton Everitt officiating. Burial will be at College Station Cemetery.

Mel was born in Dallas County on August 20, 1941, to Robert and Pauline Wood. He graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in Sulphur Spring, Texas, in 1959. He served his country as a member of the Army National Guard. He moved his family to Bryan in 1980.

After many years as a mechanic, he chose to pursue a career in the bowling industry. He was a member of the Professional Bowling Association, champion of the Senior All-Star Bowling Association and was a certified International Olympic Bowling Coach. He worked to teach children and adults how to perfect their games and to enjoy the sport. He was the owner of Spare Time Pro Shop in College Station.

He was preceded in death by his parents and oldest brother, Dennis Wood.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Wood; brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Jean Wood of Sulphur Springs, Texas; son, Robert Wood; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Wayne Desern of Bryan, Kathy Wood and Debby and Billy Hargett of College Station; grandson, Brandon Wood; granddaughters, Elizabeth, Emily and Ashley Desern and Courtney Wood, all of Bryan; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mel was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to so many. He will be greatly missed, but will live forever in the hearts of all the lives he touched with his kindness and smiles.
