Mary Keown

Mary Virginia Keown, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, passed from this life on Thursday, June 19, 2008, after a long illness. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at Hillier Funeral Home, followed by a graveside prayer service at College Station Cemetery.

Mary was born on August 19, 1913, in Houston to Jenny Marie and Charles Otis Mayes. In 1919, the family moved to Burkburnett, Texas, and it was there that she grew up to love animals, learned her amazing sewing skills and, with her mother’s guidance, gained the ability to grow flowers and gardens in virtually any condition.

In 1931, she married William Peyton Keown, a pilot whose flying skills would move the ever-growing family to College Station, where Mr. Keown trained pilots for the U.S. Air Corps during World War II at the new and developing Easterwood Airport.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Albert Mayes; and beloved husband.

Survivors include her four children, Mary Keown Benavidez of Caldwell, John Keown of Hilltop Lakes, Dan Keown of Burkburnett, Texas, and Gail Keown Lane of Lake Hills, Texas, as well as the children of four additional generations brought into this world as a result of her life.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be given to the Alzheimer’s Association or any hospice group.
