Mary Carr

Mary Elizabeth Carr, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, 84, of Bryan passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 16, 2008, at her residence.

Mary came into this world on January 31, 1924, in Robeline, La., to James H. and Mamie L. Stoker Smith. She was the sixth of ten children blessed to James and Mamie Smith. Mary graduated from Robeline High School and attended Texas State College for Women. Mary met the love of her life and lifelong companion, Harold “Hal” N. Carr, in 1941 and they were united in marriage on August 5, 1944. Hal and Mary relocated to the Bryan area in 1964 to raise their family and became lifelong members of the community.

She was a member of Abbott Hospital Women’s Auxiliary in Minnesota, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Altar Guild, Delta Delta Delta sorority, Briarcrest Country Club and Women’s Club.

Mary was an avid golfer – she was extremely proud that she hit a hole-in-one at Madden’s Resort in Minnesota. Her world was brightened by tennis, reading, gardening and cooking, but one of her main joys was traveling, as she had traveled to more than 12 different countries over the course of her life.

Mary was very devoted to her family. For more than 35 years, she hosted the family Thanksgiving get-together, which included her brothers and sisters and their families as well as her own children and their families.

She loved life, her family and friends. Mary was a perfect mother, always there for her children, guiding them to be what they are today.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Alexander James Smith, Van Smith, Bill Smith, Glenn Smith and Joe Wayne Smith; sisters, Marie Kelso and Betty McQueen; and husband, Harold “Hal” N. Carr, who passed away earlier this month.

Survivors include her beloved sons and daughters-in-law, Steven A. Carr, Hal Douglas and Michelle Carr, James T. Carr and Scott N. and Stacey Carr; the light of her life, her grandchildren, Jordon B. Carr, Travis S. Carr and Spencer A. Carr; sisters, Jimmie Vaught and Carol Sandifer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

It was Mary’s wish that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 217 W. 26th St., Bryan, TX 77803 or the Brazos County Chapter of the United Way, P.O. Box 10883, College Station, TX 77842.
