Martha Nell Evans

November 24, 1951 — July 7, 2024

College Station

Martha Nell Chambers Evans, 72, of College Station, Texas passed away peacefully on July 7, 2024, after a long battle with rheumatoid arthritis.

Martha was born in McAllen, Texas to William Stanley and Janie Louise Chambers. Her parents moved to the west Texas town of Rochester. Daughter of educators, Martha grew up in an environment that emphasized learning and was involved in FHA, 4H and marching band. She was an excellent musician, seamstress, and cook. Martha attended Texas Tech University where she played the flute in the marching band transferring to Texas A&M University, becoming a member of the Fightin Texas Aggie Class of 1972 and a 2nd generation Aggie. She met her husband Bob of 51 years at the Baptist Student Ministry. Martha went on to receive her bachelor's and master’s degree in curriculum and instruction.

Martha was a master in the classroom, teaching for over 35 years. Many of those years were spent in the San Antonio Independent School District. Certified across many specialties, her favorite was first grader reading! After “retiring”, Martha worked for Blinn College supervising and mentoring student teachers. She loved to help teachers learn how to help children.

Her love for people and hospitality stemmed from her love for Jesus Christ of whom she was a faithful disciple. Martha was most recently a member of First Baptist Church, College Station. She served the church in various capacities including orchestra, children’s choirs and committees. She and Bob modeled their faith to their 3 adult children. It is because of this faith that Martha’s family is assured she is experiencing the fullness of Christ!

Martha was preceded in death by her mother and father and is survived by her loving and devoted husband Bob, three children: Stana (Darren) Hromas of College Station, Rob (Heather) Evans of Bryan, Savannah (Philip) Gable of New London, PA, and her eight grandchildren that were her pride and joy: Noel, Evan, Simeon, Brenna, Ruth, Peter, Brycen and Bethany.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 17th at 1pm at First Baptist Church, College Station with a memorial service to follow at 2pm. Knowing she impacted many lives in her service to others, if you have a story or anecdote you would like to share about Martha with her family we will be collecting written stories at the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Texas A&M Baptist Student Ministry (aggiebsm.org/give).
