LTC John Mason Sr.

LTC John Mason Sr.

John A. Mason Sr., 78, father, granddaddy, and friend of thousands went to be with the Lord Wednesday evening in Bryan, Texas.  Services will be held Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 10:00 AM at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Nassau Bay, Texas.  Burial will be at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, Texas.  Visitation will be held Sunday, February 10 from 3-5 PM at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan, TX.
John was born March 25, 1929 of Colonial Ancestry in Trenton, New Jersey.  He was the son of Stanley I. Mason and Anna Kane.  He graduated from Rutgers University in 1951 and served as an officer in the United States Air Force with an elite group of men developing special weapons during the Cold War.  He received advanced degrees from both the University of West Virginia and the University of Wyoming.  In 1963, he went to work for NASA where he served as Deputy Chief for Preventative Medicine overseeing the quarantine of the lunar astronauts after return to earth.  He later helped develop plans for future manned space missions including the Mars missions.  He is well published in scientific journals and has received many honors and awards from NASA, Congress and the President.  His greatest award was to deliver the commencement address to the 1986 graduating class at Rutgers University.  He was very active in the Stevens Ministry at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, The Texas Triumph Car Club and traveling with friends and family.  He loved his wife of 44 yrs, his family, and all his friends very much.
He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Lockridge Mason.  He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, John Jr. and Christine Mason of College Station; son, Michael Mason of Nassau Bay, TX; Grandchildren, John III, Katherine and Stephanie Mason of College Station, Brandon Mason of Nacogdoches, TX and Tiffany Mason Aguilar of Stinnett, TX.
