Dr. Leon Bruce Treybig, 76, of College Station passed away on Monday, June 9, 2008, following a brief illness. Bruce was born on August 29, 1931, in Yoakum, Texas, to Althea Elvira Rogers and Bernhart Heinrich Treybig. He had four siblings: Bernhardt Treybig and wife Genevieve Bonin, Daisy Althea Treybig and husband, Dennis Erwin Brandl, James Alva Treybig and wife, Dorothy Marie Guinn, and Lucille Evelyn Treybig and husband, Eldon Woodrow Langford.He met and married his wife, June Mequet Treybig, while they were both students at the University of Texas. They were married on June 29, 1957 in Austin, and resided in both New Orleans and College Station.Bruce attended the University of Texas at Austin where he attained a doctorate in mathematics. His mathematical specialties were “Point Set Topology” and “Knot Theory” and he had a lifelong passion for teaching. Bruce molded the minds of countless young college students during his combined 43 years of teaching at Tulane University and Texas A&M University. When he retired on August 31, 2002, he was conferred the title of professor emeritus for his significant contributions to teaching and research at Texas A&M University.The Bruce Treybig Scholarship in Mathematics was established in November 2007 by family, friends, colleagues and former students to honor Dr. Bruce Treybig, professor emeritus of mathematics at Texas A&M University. Funds are to be used to provide one or more scholarships for deserving undergraduate students pursuing a degree from the Department of Mathematics at Texas A&M University in College Station.Bruce was preceded in death by his daughter, Sarah Treybig Howard.Survivors include his wife of 50 years, June Mequet Treybig; daughters, Rachael Althea Treybig Tucker and husband, Jarrett, of Bonham, Texas, and Mary J. Treybig DuBuisson and husband, Daniel, of College Station; son-in-law, Mike Howard of Boise, Idaho; and six beloved grandchildren, Mica and J. Tucker, Alex and Ryan DuBuisson and Matthew and Joshua Howard.In lieu of flowers or other offerings, the Treybig family has requested that donations be made to the Bruce Treybig Scholarship in Mathematics to support undergraduate students pursuing degrees in mathematics in care of the Texas A&M Foundation, 401 George Bush Dr., College Station, TX 77840-2811. Additionally, donations may be made in memory of Bruce Treybig addressed to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 220 Rock Prairie Rd., College Station, TX 77845.
