Larry William Mercer

June 20, 1949 — December 30, 2023

Larry William Mercer passed away Saturday, December 30, 2023 at the age of 74 at his home in College Station, TX. Larry was born on June 20, 1949 to William Guy Mercer and Kathryn Fletcher Mercer in New Martinsville, WV, though he spent his childhood years in San Bernadino, CA. He graduated from high school there before attending Lamar State - Port Arthur, formerly known as Port Arthur Business College, where he obtained an education in Industrial Electronics.

Larry's career as a computer analyst at DuPont was marked by diligence and expertise. He approached his work with a sense of pride and instilled this strong work ethic in his children. In addition to his career achievements, Larry proudly served in the U.S. Army. His military service exemplified his dedication to serving others and protecting his country.

For many years while Kevin & Jana were younger and still living at home, Larry enjoyed spending time with the family at their lake house in Plum Ridge, TX. He always enjoyed fishing excursions and just being on or around the water in general.

During Jana’s junior high school years, Larry dedicated his time to coaching her softball team, as well as supporting ongoing park operations such as umpiring, scorekeeping, and assisting with field maintenance.

Larry had a variety of hobbies and interests that brought him joy. Prior to moving to College Station, he enjoyed buying and fixing up old golf carts to resell. Later in life he became passionate about radio-controlled airplanes and drones, visiting casinos, and traveling via cruises. He particularly enjoyed the family Disney cruise, as it provided an opportunity for loved ones to come together and create lasting memories. In his last years, Larry really took an interest in 3D printing. He learned how to create a number of different items from customized photo night lights and lithophanes to his most recent projects which included Christmas ornaments and cabins.

Larry valued his friendships within the R/C and drone community. In particular, he cherished his companionship with Buddy Brammer and Al Romig who brightened his mornings with their camaraderie.

Larry is survived by his loving spouse of 51 years, Regina Trahan Mercer; children, Kevin Mercer of Los Angeles, CA and Jana McDonald and her husband David (Mac) of College Station, TX; grandchildren, Ashley McDonald and Jacob McDonald; and brother, Ron Mercer and his wife Cindy of Many, LA.

Let us remember Larry for his loyalty, generosity, and great sense of humor. The joy he brought into our lives will be deeply missed and forever remembered in our hearts.
