Katherine “Kathy” Elizabeth Duval, 57, of Bryan passed away on Friday, July 18, 2008, at her residence. Memorial services are set for 1 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at St. Francis Episcopal Church, located at 1101 Rock Prairie Road in College Station.

Kathy was born on October 2, 1950, in Los Angeles. She graduated from University of Houston with a Bachelor of Art in business administration. She served honorably in the U.S. Air Force, Air Force Reserve and Texas Air National Guard as an E5 Staff Sergeant.

Kathy enjoyed working in her field of interest in adult education with emphasis in literacy and English as a second language. She served as a program director of the Literacy Council in Pasadena, Texas, directing English as a Second Language (ESL) program and GED preparation programs. She also worked as a tutor trainer with the Harris County Library System conducting literacy and ESL tutor training workshops.

She came to Bryan and became the executive director of Literacy Volunteers of America, where her responsibilities included training volunteers as literacy tutors. Kathy was also a substitute teacher with the Pasadena, Bryan and College Station Independent School Districts.

Her community activities included serving on the board of directors at the Brazos Community Council and as a volunteer and board member of Stage Centre in Bryan. She was a member of the Kiwanis and, during the Christmas season, was a bell ringer for the Salvation Army.

Survivors include her sons, Trevor Duval and Timothy Duval, both of Manchester, N.H.; grandchildren, Jenna and Andrew Halcarz-Duval of Manchester, N.H.; father and stepmother, Bill and Barbara Thomas of College Station; brothers, James Thomas of Tyler, Texas, Mark Thomas of Houston and Dean Thomas of Friendswood, Texas; sister, Jane Gray of Dickenson, Texas; stepsisters, Lisa Kirkpatrick of Austin and Amy Castillo of League City, Texas; and stepbrother, Tom Washam of College Station.
