John Edward Proske, 72, of Bryan passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2008, at Sherwood Nursing Home.
John was born on January 30, 1936, in Dime Box, Texas, to Gerhard and Julia Marek Proske. He graduated from Dime Box High School and Blinn College. He moved to Snook after he married Shirley Ann Sebesta Burkhalter on July 10, 1970. They were members of Snook Brethren Church and then joined Hope Evangelical Free Church in Bryan, where they were members for over 20 years.
He moved to Bryan in September 1978. He served in the U.S. Army as a private first class. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans Post No. 200 and the American Legion Post No. 159.
John loved building furniture for his daughters-in-law, he continued this until his health would not permit it. He joined Central Baptist Church in 2003.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Shirley Ann (Sebesta) Proske; the light of his life, his sons, Alton Earl Burkhalter Jr. and Michael Keith Burkhalter, whom he adopted; daughters-in-law, Rose and Laura Burkhalter; mother-in-law, Angelina Sebesta; sister-in-law, Margie Bailey of Plano, Texas; granddaughters, Tiffany and Lauren Burkhalter of Snook and Ashley and Kristen Dinger of Nacagdoches, Texas; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Edmund and Lenora Sebesta; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gerhard and Linda Proske of Giddings and Robert and Nancy Proske of Houston; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Edgar Mitschke of Robstown, Texas; stepmother, Florence Proske of Giddings; and numerous nieces and nephews.
