John Erving Cozad

August 3, 1933 — May 9, 2024

College Station, TX

John Erving Cozad, a dedicated veterinarian and proud Fightin' Texas Aggie ('55), passed away on May 9, 2024. Born on August 3, 1933, John brought warmth, compassion, and a steadfast spirit to everyone he encountered. A graduate of Milby High School ('51) in Houston, John went on to attend Texas A&M University, where he spent two formative years in the Corps of Cadets. His leadership shone through his pivotal role in establishing the Civilian Student Council at Texas A&M in Spring '54, and his time as a civilian Yell Leader from '55 to '56. His time and involvement at Texas A&M remained a cherished memory.

John graduated with the Class of '57 from Texas A&M's veterinary school and began his career at Westbury Animal Hospital in Houston. His passion for veterinary medicine led him to serve as President of the Harris County Veterinarian Medical Association in '71. He continued to make a significant impact through his practice and ownership of Northern Oaks Bird & Animal Hospital in San Antonio. From '93 to '95, John served as President of the San Antonio Chapter of the Delta Society, where he helped establish a Pet Grief Helpline, offering solace to many. John’s final veterinary practice was at the Port Isabel Animal Clinic.

Beyond his professional achievements, John found joy in ranching, classic cars, travel, and, most importantly, being "PawPaw" to his beloved grandchildren. John was most proud of his family and never missed a family occasion. He instilled the importance of education, generosity, and servant leadership in his family – qualities he exemplified day in and day out. John's legacy is one of profound compassion, dedication, and unwavering service to both his community and his profession.

He is survived by his family, Carla Cozad (daughter), Monica (daughter) and Mark Baughman, Mary Cozad (daughter) and Jim Chancey, along with eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his son, John Eldred Cozad, and his sister, Carlene C. Greer. John’s presence will be profoundly missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Bluebonnet Court, Crestview Skilled Nursing, Acara Hospice, and Visiting Angels Caregivers for their compassionate support and care of John. Memorial contributions may be made to the Texas A&M 12th Man Foundation or the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.

John’s remarkable journey through life, marked by his dedication to service and love for family, will continue to inspire all who knew him.
