Dr. Jay W. Martin Jr., 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 14, 2008, at St. Joseph Regional Health Center. Services are set for 10 a.m. Friday, July 18, at Hillier Funeral Home with the Revs. Ted Foote and Marie Mickey of First Presbyterian Church of Bryan officiating. Burial will follow at Rest-EverMemorial Park. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 17, at the funeral home.

Jay was born on Sept. 23, 1920, in Temple, Texas. He attended Texas Tech University and graduated in 1940 with a chemistry degree. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged on April 8, 1954.

After serving in the U.S. Navy, he worked at the V.A. Hospital in Temple, Texas, where he met Dorothy R. Bussey, who was working as a nurse. They were married on Jan. 9, 1949, in San Antonio at Dorothy’s church. Jay and Dorothy then moved to Houston, where he earned his degree of Internal Medicine in 1950 from Baylor University.

Jay moved his family to Bryan to practice Internal Medicine at the Bryan Clinic. He belonged to the Bryan Medical Society and served as president in 1989. Jay practiced Internal Medicine for many years and made many nighttime house calls to treat his patients in small communities surrounding Bryan.

After starting his medical practice, Jay volunteered for many years as a cellist in the Brazos Symphony Orchestra.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jay W. Sr. and Laura Martin, and son, Jay W. “Butch” Martin III.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Ruth; daughters, Charis Worden and Leta Martin; son, Todd Martin; grandchildren, Deanna Worden, Jay T. Martin, Meritza Tomez and Thomas Tomez; son-in-law, Gary Worden; and brother and sister-in-law, Phillip and Esperanza Martin.

Pallbearers will be Gary Worden, Ronnie Allen, Glenn Lea, Tom Pennell, Al Nichols, Ron Nambric and Charles Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be George Smith, Scotty Scott, Rue Goodall and Paul Smith.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley.
