Jack Hefley

Dr. Jack Darrell Hefley, 74, of Bryan died Monday, April 1, 2008, at his residence.
Jack was born on September 26, 1933, in Kansas, Okla., to Jeff and Edna Hefley. He received his associate degree from Pensacola Junior College in 1956, his Bachelor of Science in chemistry, with honors, in 1958, his Master of Science in physical chemistry in 1960 and his doctorate in physical chemistry in 1963 from the University of Arkansas, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was a member of ACS, AIC and Sigma XI.
Jack was a chemistry professor at Blinn College in Bryan from 1990 to 2003. He was a technical consultant for Soltex Polymer Corp. in the area of polyethylene and polypropylene resins; a consulting expert in plastics for the Law Firm of Floyd, Taylor and Riley in Houston; a consulting expert in plastics for the Law Firm of Brooks, Haidt, Haffner and Delahunty in New York City; and a technical consultant for BP Chemicals, Ltd., in New York City.
He worked for E.I. Du Pont in Waynesboro, Va., in 1960 as a chemist in textile research involving solution spinning of Orlon with other polymers to improve yarn properties. He worked for Union Carbide in Charleston, W. Va., from 1963 to 1965 as a development chemist with project leader duties for improving PVC copolymer resin quality for coatings applications through process changes.
He worked for Fiber Industries Inc. in Charlotte, N.C., from 1965 to 1968 as a project engineer for process and product development of synthetic leather made from polyester fibers. He worked for Cyrovac division of W.R. Grace in Duncan, S.C., from 1968 to 1976 as a process and product development manager for food packaging films made from synthetic resins.
He worked for St. Regis Paper Co. in Dallas as a film development manager for coextruded films for the packaging of food products. He worked for Soltex Polymer Corp. in Houston from 1981 to 1989 as a product development and technical service manager for high density polyethylene resins.
Jack also served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1954 as a naval photographer.
Survivors include his wife, Inna Hefley, son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Ludmila Hefley, and sister, Maxine Holcomb.
