Hugh Wayne Kirby, 57, of Bryan went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 26, 2008, at St. Joseph Regional Health Center. Memorial services are set for 11 a.m. Saturday, June 28, at First Baptist Church in Bryan. Graveside services are set for 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Hughes Cemetery in Ellis County, Texas.
Hugh was born in Avalon, Texas, to Herbert and Joycie Kirby. He traveled with the Sunshine Singers before settling in Bryan-College Station, where he spent his adult life. He worked at Texas A&M Univeristy’s Memorial Student Center for more than 31 years, where he became an honorary member of the Singing Cadets. During this time, he was a beloved member of the congregation at First Baptist Church in Bryan. He was also a celebrity pass holder for the Barnum & Bailey Circus.
Hugh was a staunch Aggie, a true friend and a devout Christian whose faith inspired many. He was a man of his word and a man of honor, always seeking to do what was right. He was steadfast in the face of the many challenges of his life, and he was the face of God’s love to everyone he encountered. Many families considered him one of their own. He saw each person as equal, as worthwhile, and as precious.
Survivors include his two brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Vicki Kirby of Lake Jackson, Texas, and Jerry and Suzzanne Kirby of Red Oak, Texas; nieces, Paige Frome and husband, Bill, and their children of Richardson, Texas, Kim Markle and husband, Jeff, and their three children of Fort Worth, Texas, and Ellen Kirby of Lake Jackson, Texas; and nephew, Patrick Kirby and wife, Shannon, and their three children of West Columbia, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Singing Cadets, c/o Texas A&M University, or First Baptist Church in Bryan.
Hugh Wayne Kirby will be greatly, greatly missed.
