Helen Borges

Helen Francis Borges, 71, of Bryan passed away on Friday, July 18, 2008. Memorial services are set for 2 p.m. Sunday, July 20, at Hillier Funeral Home.

Helen was born on December 22, 1936. She was the devoted wife of Edward Borges for nearly 45 years. She was born and raised in Fall River, Mass., and lived there until 1991, when she moved to College Station.

She was an office manager for various companies, including the mayor’s office, People Inc. the Credit Bureau and Citizens for Citizens. Helen worked for “Freddy” at Curry Plumbing Company from 1995 until her retirement in 2002, and she said it was one of her favorite jobs. It was there she met her best friend Betty. Both the job and everlasting friendships were things that she cherished most.

Survivors include her husband, Edward Borges; son and daughter-in-law, John Arie and Betty Borges; daughter, Christina Marie Patch; grandchildren, Michael, Tracy and Eddie Borges; and cousin, Rita Gourdreau of Central Falls, R.I.

Helen and Ed transplanted themselves to College Station in 1991 after one too many East Coast winters. Both were drawn to the young, college atmosphere and the feel of the B-CS community. It is that community that we, as her surviving family, would like to now thank. Table no. 21 at Outback Steakhouse was a Friday night staple for Helen and Ed, and the staff who work there have been a second family to both of them. Mom was nourished with great food and greater conversation by all.  Thank you.

A special thank you needs to go to all of the caring staff at College Station Medical, Scott and White, and her private doctor, Dr. Richardson. There is really no way to properly thank the numerous people who handle hospice care, transport services, nursing staff, and rehabilitation. All of these people worked tirelessly to make this journey one with grace and dignity. We are forever grateful.

God saw she was getting tired, and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around her and whispered, “Come with Me.” With tearful eyes, we watched her suffer, and saw her fade away. Although we loved her dearly, we could not make her stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands to rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.
