Gertrude Ellis (Shoemate)

Gertrude Ellis (Shoemate), 98, left this world on May 8, 2022. Born April 28, 1924, Gertrude was a strong, independent, yet stubborn woman who instilled in others the need to think for yourself and be independent.

Gertrude received an honorable discharge from the Army WAF, Women in the Air Force, and her last job was at Texas Department of Criminal Justice.  She loved country music, working with horses and cattle, horseracing, and gambling, but the greatest day of her life was the birth of her daughter.

Gertrude was preceded in death by two husbands, Raymond Ellis and James Shoemate; her parents, Jerry Wells and Sylvia Ford Wells; siblings, Richard Burkett, Dorothy Higgenbottom, Virginia Wells, Louise Ozborn, and Betty Clark; and her furry friend, Charlie.

Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Sylvia Shoemate and husband, Jack Williams and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to acknowledge Gertrude’s special care given by Navasota Nursing Home and Rehabilitation and Traditions Hospice.
