Reverend Thomas Hanus, a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Austin, born in Bryan, Texas, on December 19, 1939, passed away on July 9, 2023, at the age of 83.
The only child of the late Thomas Hanus, Jr. and Mary Christine Zak, he was born in Bryan, Texas, on December 19, 1939. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Bryan and later St. John’s Minor Seminary in San Antonio. He went on to attend St. Mary’s Major Seminary in Houston for eight years and was ordained a priest on May 28, 1966, at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Austin. Rev. Hanus received a Master of Theology degree from St. Thomas University in Houston in 1970 and attended several graduate courses in counseling at Texas A&M University.
He served in numerous communities, including St. Mary’s Parish in Brenham (1966-1969), Guardian Angel Parish in Wallis (1969-1976), St. Mary’s Parish and Catholic Center in College Station (1976-1978), Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish and its mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Eagle Lake (1978-1982), St. Joseph’s Parish in Rockdale (1982-1991), and St. Monica’s Parish in Cameron (1991-2005). Rev. Hanus also served as the first canonical pastor for the Holy Family mission in Lexington (1990-1991).
Donations may be made in memory of Rev. Hanus to St. Joseph Catholic School in Bryan, Texas.
