Edgar Earle “Skeeter” Jones

Edgar Earle “Skeeter” Jones, 88, of College Station, Texas passed away on March 4, 2024. He was born in the Harvey Community on October 21, 1935 to Charles Nunn Jones and Lula Mary Floyd Jones.

Skeeter grew up in the rural Harvey Community of College Station and attended Bryan schools while working on the family ranch with his parents and brothers. He was a 1954 graduate of SFA High School in Bryan and married Jimmye Dell Owens on August 4, 1956.

Skeeter was a service member of the U.S. Army and later received his Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education from Texas A&I in Kingsville.

After college graduation, Skeeter and Jimmye Dell moved to Devine, TX where he began a 29-year career as a public-school teacher and coach. He also coached in the communities of Cuero, Brookshire, Robstown, Sinton, Taft, Rockport, and Wharton. Skeeter always said that Jimmye Dell was his best assistant coach.

After retiring in 1995, Skeeter and Jimmye Dell moved back to Bryan where he enjoyed playing with his grandkids and great grandkids, as well as hunting with his yellow lab, Buck.

Skeeter was a born-again Christian and placed his faith in the completed work of Jesus Christ on the cross. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in College Station.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Jimmye Dell Jones; his parents; and two brothers, Floyd Milton Jones and Charles Brenning Jones.

Skeeter is survived by his children, Marcus Owen Jones (Karen) of Richmond, TX, Melody McClean (Herb) of Richmond, TX, James Keith Jones (Sharon) of Bullard, TX, and Jeffrey Kyle Jones (Dee Ann) of Bryan, TX; nine grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on March 16, 2024 at 11am at Hillier Funeral Home, 4080 Hwy 6, College Station with Pastor Clyde Strong officiating. A reception will follow at Bethel Baptist Church, 9900 SH 30, College Station.
