Don Ray Halverson

March 1, 1947 — May 31, 2023

Don Ray Halverson, 76 of College Station, was born in Menomonie, Wisconsin and passed away May 31, 2023.

He grew up in Clinton, Iowa and graduated as Valedictorian of Clinton High School in 1965. He furthered his career at the University of Iowa and earned the highest GPA of his graduating class of 1968. He attended the University of Illinois from 1968-1972 and earned his PhD in Engineering from the University of Texas Austin in 1979. Don served in the Air Force in San Antonio, Texas 1972-1975 and in Colorado Springs at the Air Force Academy as a mathematics instructor.

An Assistant Professor of Engineering at Texas A&M until his retirement in 2009, Don single-handedly built a 32” lens telescope, the largest in the U.S. An intelligent, individualistic, and artistic man, he had a love of learning, love of the arts, and a great love for his country and for Texas. He loved Greek literature, playing the guitar, and engaging conversations, and although a bit eccentric, he was devoted to family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Thelma Moore Halverson.

Don is survived by his wife, Mary Jurgensen Halverson; his son, Adam Halverson and wife Michelle; and grandchildren, Roman Halverson and wife Catherine, Isabella Halverson, and Lilliana Halverson.
