College Station

Carolyn “Carol” Lewis, 83, of College Station, Texas, passed away October 11, 2022.

Carol was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her kindhearted and giving nature was evident to all who met her.

Carol grew up in the rural community of Thorndale, Texas as an only child. She attended Texas Women’s University where she studied psychology, and met her husband Donald Lewis while working at Brown’s School.  Shortly after their engagement, Donald received draft orders to serve in the Army Medical Corps. A wedding was planned in three short days, and once her coursework was completed, Carol joined her new husband for two years in Germany.

Carolyn taught over 20 years in the local public schools. She obtained her first Master’s Degree in Education from Texas A&M University and her second Master’s in Educational Administration from Prairie View A&M University.

Education was important to Carol, but her life was invested in passionately caring for others. While teaching home-bound students and Special Education classes, and serving as a school counselor, Carol was adamant about helping all kids learn from books as well as life experiences.  Carol had a unique way of relating to everyone with respect and treating others with dignity especially those whom others might call “problem kids”.

Carol was known for her sense of humor and wit, but not everyone knew that she was an avid sports fan. Very down-to-earth, patient, and courteous, she was also a wonderful listener. Carolyn never stopped caring for others, including several aging relatives over the years. Her sons and grandkids greatly benefited from her giving and supportive nature, and she was always ready to help with anything. Watching her grandchildren grow up was a special joy to her. Her hobbies included sewing, gardening, and collecting interesting playthings for the grandkids.

Carol loved to pass along stories and the history of her family in rural Texas. It was her vision to remodel the 130 year-old barn on the family farm where her father had raised animals and kept sweet potatoes. She created a family gathering space by deconstructing two corn-cribs and reassembling them in a new structure. Aptly named “Carolyn Kay Ranch”, the farm is a special place filled with memories for her sons, her grandchildren, and many others to enjoy.

Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents, Lyle and Shirley Conoley; and her son, David Lewis.

Carolyn’s survivors include her loving husband of 62 years, Donald H. Lewis, Sr.; her children, Donald H. Lewis, Jr. and wife Ghislaine, John M. Lewis and wife Heather, and James M. “Mike” Lewis; and her six beloved grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3:00 pm on December 3, 2022 at First Presbyterian Church in Bryan, TX.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the College Station ISD Education Foundation. Checks should be made payable to CSISD Education Foundation with "In memory of Carol Lewis" in the memo line and mailed to 1812 Welsh Ave, College Station, TX 77840.  Or, make your donation online  https://givetokids.csisd.org and click on the donate button.
