Andrew David Powell

June 3, 1996 — April 21, 2022

Austin, Texas

On Thursday, April 21, 2022, Andrew David Powell, a beloved son and brother, died in Austin, Texas, at the age of 25.

Drew, as we affectionately called him, was born in Yuma, Arizona, on June 3rd, 1996.  At 18 months of age we moved back to Bryan, TX, where Drew grew up with his parents; Clay and Sarah Barnes, and his brothers: Matthew Powell and Jacob Barnes and his sister; Samantha Barnes. As a child, Drew was a heartbreaker, with his purplish-blue eyes and his devilish grin.  He loved to entertain with the Barney and Happy Birthday songs, followed by joyful clapping for himself because he was so cute. His joy of entertaining carried on throughout his life.  He brought laughter to his friendships and his daredevil nature to all activities both good and not so good, at times.

Drew had a passion for outdoor activities. He loved skateboarding, skeet shooting, hunting, fishing with family, friends and cousins at his Nana’s and Pawpaw’s lakehouse, on Lake Palestine.  He loved his vacations and camping trips with his Grandma Eileen & Grandpa Eric, Aunt Jennifer and Aunt Whitney. He also loved playing board games and cards with Nana Julie and the rest of his family. Drew was a tattoo enthusiast and talented artist who had dreams of becoming a tattoo artist one day. He loved music and went to live concerts whenever possible, with his friends.

Drew will be remembered as a sensitive, caring and generous person who would bring treats for friends, family, the cousins and dogs alike when he visited. He remembered his mother’s birthdays and Mother’s Day and always sent her or gave her something for each. He enjoyed reading and long conversations about the metaphysical and the interconnectedness of our world. Drew was the type of person that would give the shirt off his back even if it meant he was cold.  He was so funny and loved to see others smile.

Drew moved to Austin in January of 2022, where he lived near his aunt, uncle, and younger cousins. Drew worked primarily in food service, most recently at Fiesta Mart where he was appreciated by his coworkers and will be missed.

Drew is survived by his parents, Clay and Sarah Barnes; siblings Matthew Powell, Samantha Barnes, and Jacob Barnes; his Nana - Julie Paprock; his Nana - Lana Barnes and Pawpaw - Bob Barnes; Grandma Eileen Powell and Grandpa Eric Powell, biological father Aaron Powell, and loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Like too many young people in our communities, Drew struggled with addiction. Although he was able to help some friends escape his fate, he was unable to maintain his own recovery and died of an overdose. If you or someone you love is in need of help, please do not wait to get them assistance.

A Visitation will be held on Monday, May 9, 2022, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at Hillier of Bryan. A Celebration of Life will follow immediately after the Visitation. Family life minister Bill Wise from Central Church will speak at 1 p.m., and others will be welcome to share memories of Drew at the service. At 3:30 p.m., a room has been reserved at C&J’s BBQ on Texas Avenue, in Bryan, for those who would like to gather and share after the service.
