Helen Nachlinger

Helen Louise (Allen) Nachinger

Helen Louise Nachlinger, 89, passed away on Monday, November 16 at Park Place Assisted Living in Bryan, Texas.   She formerly lived in Cameron and Hearne.

Helen was born June 13, 1926 in Elgin, Texas to William Harvie and Elma DeGlandon Allen.  She graduated from Elgin High School and worked at Camp Swift in Bastrop County during World War II.  Helen married her high school sweetheart, E.A. “Buster” Nachlinger, September 7, 1944 just before he left for service with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Pacific and post-war Japan in World War II.

Helen and Buster lived in Cameron for many years where she worked for Milam County in several departments including the Veterans’ Service Office.   She was active in the First Baptist Church of Cameron. They later moved to Hearne where she was active in the First Baptist Church of Hearne.  Helen was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Helen was a devoted mother and friend.  She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and playing cards and dominos.  Family was very important to her and she liked to spend time with her grand children.  She always liked to travel but she didn’t like to fly and Buster hated hotels so, after Buster’s retirement from the Southern Pacific Railroad, they traveled all over the country, including Alaska and Canada, in their motorhome.

She was preceded in death, by her beloved husband of 63 years in 2008, by her parents and by her brother, William Harvie Allen, Jr. who died while serving with the Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II.

Helen is survived by two sons and daughters in law: Harvie Nachlinger and Suzy Herzog, of Columbia, SC, and James Nachlinger and Kathryn, of Bryan, Texas.   She is also survived by five grandchildren: Joe Nachlinger and wife, Sharma, of Dayton, Ohio; Kristen Pillans and husband, Brandan, of Plano, Texas; Alex Gaston of Trenton, Fl.; Justin Nachlinger and wife, Denna, of Parkville, Mo.; and Kaitlyn Nachlinger of New Braunfels, Texas.  She also has five great-grandchildren; Addison Nachlinger of Dayton, Ohio; Nikolas Pillans and Parker Pillans of Plano, Texas; Toby Gaston of Trenton, Fl.; and Tavin Nachlinger of Parkville, Mo.  She is also survived by a special great nephew, James Franze and Deb of Stonewall, Texas.

The family would like to express thanks to the staff of Park Place Assisted Living for the kind and loving care that was given to Helen.

A family graveside service will be held on Friday November 20th with a Memorial Service to follow at 1:00 pm in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church of Bryan.

The family asks in lieu of flowers contributions be made to First Presbyterian Church of Bryan or a charity of choice.
