Rosalinda Aregullin

Rosalinda Aregullín-Valdez, Ph.D.

Rosalinda Aregullín, 65, entered Heaven’s gates on Friday, July 22, 2016. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother who demonstrated how attaining an education, loving others and keeping a sense of humor—no matter life’s circumstances—are the sure foundation for living a rich life.

Rosalinda was born on December 21, 1950, in Reynosa, Tamaulipas to her parents Baldomero and ErnestinaValdez. Life was never boring thanks to Rosalinda’s rambunctious nature and that of her four siblings: Estefana Pineda, Alicia Aregullín, Baldomero Valdez, Jr., and Elena Aregullín. Fearless as the middle child, Rosalinda was fiercely loyal to and protective of her brother and sisters as their family immigrated to McAllen, Texas, in search of more opportunities for personal progress. Out of necessity, Rosalinda learned early to be assertive and outspoken in support of justice and equality of opportunity for all people. She was bright and studious, energetic and fun—known for her love of affectionate teasing, joking and laughter. In her brother’s words, “She kept the family together.”

As a scholar, Rosalinda was hungry for knowledge and pursued it with focused determination.  She graduated early from McAllen High School in 1969.  Later, she would graduate from Texas A&M University with a Bachelors (1979), a Masters (1990) and a Doctoral degree (2010), making her a fully pedigreed Aggie, a heritage of which she was extremely proud. Her professional life was dedicated to teaching Hispanic Studies at TAMU—in which department she also served as an Academic Advisor over Undergraduate Advising—a natural extension of her ability and generous desire to demand and defend the rights of others.  Truly, she fought hard for the causes she cared about.

On her lifelong quest for higher education, Rosalinda also found love. She married Jaime Aregullín in 1987; they are the parents of two daughters, Rosalinda Castillo Reyes (and husband José) and Elizabeth Marie Castillo (and fiancé Lucas). As passionate as she was about education and equal rights, Rosalinda was even more diligent as a “helicopter” mother, hovering around her daughters to ensure that they, too, would grow into confident, compassionate Latina women. Always a proud parent, Rosalinda’s brightest days came when each of her daughters received their degrees in higher education from A&M.  At home, she joked and teased, listened to her favorite “corridos,” loved literature and gardening and wearing her favorite color, maroon.  She was as graceful and kind as she was ambitious, a lady with a rich life who knew and numbered her blessings, especially those found in her family members and loved ones.

Remembering and missing Rosalinda the most are her devoted husband Jaime, her daughters and their sweethearts as well as her four surviving siblings. Her beloved eight grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, close friends and colleagues also mark Rosalinda’s passing with loving memories. She was predeceased by her parents.
