Robert Warren McCann

Robert “Bobby” Warren McCann, 80, passed away on August 26, 2017.
Bobby McCann was born on May 10, 1937 to Robert and Mary Opel (Warren) McCann in Round Rock, TX. He grew up in Dallas, but spent lots of time in Round Rock with his aunt and uncle. Times were hard, and he often hunted squirrels for the dinner table, but still recalled his childhood as carefree, and loved being able to run around outside all day. As a teenager, he loved working on cars. Hot rods on dirt tracks were his favorite. This love of cars led him to his lifetime career. He worked for General Motors as a parts picker in Dallas for over thirty years.
Bobby met the love of his life, Lola Bess Basinger while living in Dallas, and after a three year courtship, they were married on February 25, 1975. Along with his two sons, John and Clint, Bobby came to be loved like a father by Lola’s kids, Terri, Bill, and Stacy. Family was always very important to him, and his favorite times were spent at Lake Palestine with kids and grandkids around a bonfire telling stories or serving up fish he’d fried himself. His mouth watering fish fries always drew a crowd. He loved to tell stories sitting around with family.
Bobby was a quiet, easygoing man, but he could be stubborn about some things. Even so, he was the first to offer a helping hand to his neighbors. He did yard work, checked mail, served countless hours of ‘dumpster duty,’ and performed many other acts of kindness to the neighborhood at Westwood Beach. Late in life, he and Lola joined the Chandler United Methodist Church. He developed several close friends whose love and support sustained him in his final days.
He loved to whittle. He experimented with lots of projects such as praying hands and fish, but his specialty was carving monkeys from peach pits. Many of us have one of his peach pit monkeys. When you came to visit, it was NASCAR or the Weather Channel. He also enjoyed Lone Star Beer, and his grandchildren remember trying to figure out the riddles in the bottle caps.
Bobby leaves behind his beloved wife Lola, his sister Barbara Beulan, brother and sister-in-law Jim and Sharon McCann, son and daughter-in-law Clint and Shelly McCann, step-daughter and son-in-law Terri and Frank Land, step-son and daughter-in-law Bill and Terry Beemer, step-daughter and son–in-law Stacy and Dale Varley, eleven grandchildren: Rob, Amber, Melody, Emily, C.J., Jonathan, Daniel, Rachel, Jessica, John, and Julianne, and eleven great-grandchildren: Elizabeth, Blake, Topanga, Rachel Faith, Reagan, Madison, Kennedy, Harrison, Blair, Nathan, and Roman. He will be greatly missed by them all, and many other friends and extended family.
