Mike Holberg

Michael Paul Holberg, age 48, of College Station, Texas, passed from this life and into eternity on February 20, 2021, after a two-month battle with COVID-19 related complications. We know that Mike is now fully healed, and he is at home in heaven. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Jenny Lai Holberg; his children Sydney, Lauren and Lucas; his brother Jeremy (Leticia) Holberg of The Woodands, Texas; mother, Sally Holberg of The Woodlands, Texas; father, Cory Holberg of Wimberly, Texas; along with many other in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mike was born to Sally Holberg and Cory Holberg on February 16, 1973, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He grew up in Houston where he graduated from Klein Forest high school in 1991. Mike was an avid baseball player, natural leader, strong big brother, faithful son and a good friend. He went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M in 1997. After college, Mike met Jenny while they both were on a mission trip overseas. They were married in Houston, Texas, on September 16, 2000. Mike and Jenny shared a passion for loving and serving college students (in the US and abroad) and served with Cru together for over twenty years. Most recently, Mike served on Cru's national team as the Director of Mission Insights and Analytics for the Campus Ministry. Even while holding various national team roles, Mike has often helped lead or serve as needed on the local Bridges Team (international student ministry) at Texas A&M. Mike was known as someone who was quick to step into whatever needs he encountered, both professionally and personally.

Mike was a man of strength and presence. He was strong in sports, Aggie Spirit, humor, faith, family, ministry, work, and service. He was known for his loyalty, leadership, technological expertise, protectiveness, work-ethic, and above all his commitment to his kids. Mike centered all his resources and his greatest pleasures in life around his wife and kids. That included coaching Lucas' baseball team for the last five years and coaching the girls' softball team since they were eight. Last year the girls' team ended the season with a championship! Most recently he served as the Director of Field Operations for the Brazos Valley Girls Softball Association (BVGSA), where he worked the fields, ensured all equipment was available and ready, ran board meetings, worked with the city, managed practice/game schedules and planned BVGSA events. He was ever-present in the lives of those he loved.

At any given moment Mike could have been found building a batting cage for his kids; enjoying an Astro game with his brother; laughing over lunch with friends; hauling something for someone in his truck; engaged in deep conversation with his wife; solving any multiple of technological challenges; or sharing this Truth that guided his life (from Mike's April 10, 2020--Good Friday-- post on Facebook):

The hours that fell between Good Friday and Jesus' resurrection left the followers of Jesus in anxiety, fear and uncertainty…but not without hope! As we now wait in the hours that pass between Good Friday and the Resurrection, we can also empathize with the state many find themselves in during this current pandemic. In a worldly sense, hope is for a vaccine, for therapeutic drugs/treatments, for more personal protective equipment and more ventilators. Yet no matter the circumstances we may find ourselves in, our ultimate hope is found in Jesus - the perfector of our faith. As we contemplate redemption today, I'm praying that this simple but supremely powerful message of the gospel will be renewed in you, in me and that it would find those who desperately need Jesus. From Hebrews 12:1-2 - Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Mike has finished his race, and he ran in such a way as to win the prize. God has greeted him with, "Well done, my good and faithful servant." Mike will spend Easter 2021 in the actual presence of His resurrected Savior! May many fix their eyes on Jesus because of Mike's faithfulness and unwavering HOPE in Jesus. Mike's legacy of strength and service ensures that his presence will continue to loom large in the hearts of his children, wife, family, friends, and community for years to come.
