Mary Ruth Wendt

Mary Ruth Wendt passed away February 1, 2019, at the age of 91.

Mary was born September 20, 1927 in Starkville, Mississippi to Chelcey and Mae Templeton. The youngest of three children, Mary had a wonderful childhood in Mississippi. Her mother was a school teacher and homemaker, while her father was a farmer, allowing Mary to grow up with horses. Her daddy trained horses on the farm, and Mary grew up as a “tom-boy” extraordinaire hunting and doing things with her dad. After graduating from Starkville High School, Mary wanted to be a pilot, but instead went to the University of Illinois for engineering.
Mary attended the university for two years before leaving to marry the love of her life, Edwin Arthur Wendt. The two were married in 1947 and were blessed with 54 years together before he passed away in 2001. She was a loving wife and a wonderful mother to their two daughters children Rita & Patty. She used to say her daughters “Rita and Patty were as different as daylight and dark,” loving them both. Mary was always ready for an adventure or to go places, and she used to tell her husband, “I’ll be home when you see me coming.” Her family always came first in her life, and her family will always lovingly remember eating her signature smothered steak with mashed potatoes and cheesecake.
Mary loved working as an accountant and was very involved in work organizations when she was in the workforce. When she retired, she couldn’t stand not working, so she took many different jobs. She worked in clothing stores and outlet malls, anything that would allow her to continue to meet new people and interact with them. In her older years, she settled into retirement and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her hobbies. She liked standing out in a crowd and loved having her jewelry and accessories all together. She loved bowling and games with friends. She played pinochle with her dear friends and dominoes and bingo with friends at Accel in her later years. She was always very vivacious and enjoyed talking to people. Mary had an amazing spirit.  She was so full of life and always brought laughter and smiles to everyone that took the time to talk with her.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Edwin Arthur Wendt, her grandson Bob Barnett, Jr. and her sons-in-law Bob Barnett, Sr., Paul Valen, and Burt Root. She leaves behind her loving family: her children Rita Loriece Barnett Root, Patty Lynn Valen and Mike Bowlin, Tara Barnett, Aubrey Barnett and fiancé Chase Holland, Maribella Barnett, Dan Root and wife Penn, Darrell Root and wife Renee, Felicia Stinnett and husband Todd, Olivia Brinlee and husband Josh Hayes, Anthony Root and wife Margie, Taylor Stinnett, Sophie Stinnett, Ryann Hayes, Morgan Root, Mia Root, Marlee Root, W.C. “Bill” Templeton III and wife Jan, Darlene Pikington Hagler and husband John, and Teresa Pikington Madden and husband Keith.
To honor Mary’s life, her family has planned a graveside service at Hillcrest Garden of Memory Cemetery in Hillsboro, Texas on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 1 PM.
