Jim Larry Nelson

Jim Larry Nelson (“Larry”), of College Station, Texas, went to be with his Lord on February 6, 2018. Born in Houston on January 16, 1933, Larry had just enjoyed celebrating his 85th birthday. He died peacefully with family in attendance of a progressive lung disease. He was a lifelong Texas resident, living primarily in Houston and College Station. He was a graduate of University of Houston with a Masters in Education from Sam Houston State.

Because of the qualities he possessed and cultivated, he was loved and admired by many, and will be deeply missed by family and friends. He was generous and loved to help others, compassionate, personable, full of fun and life, honest, encouraging; a loving husband and father. He was a natural leader. Most of all, he was completely genuine.

Larry was a true “Renaissance Man,” having worked as a teacher, preacher, rehabilitation counselor, and small business owner; he was a handyman, an avid hunter and fisherman, outdoorsman, and music lover who had a marvelous baritone voice. He excelled in many sports, especially football, basketball, and baseball. He loved to listen to the Gaither Vocal Band. Larry enjoyed recounting humorous stories of people he had known, the bird dogs he loved and practical jokes he had played. He delighted young children with his Donald Duck imitation.

He was predeceased by his dear wife of 42 years, Sandra, parents Leroy and Opal Nelson, sister Danice Boler, and great-grandson Roane Nelson, born February 6, 2012; and is survived by his beloved wife of 19 years, Shirley Nelson; daughter Kimberly Nelson, sons and daughters-in-law Brit and Dawn Nelson of Houston; and Barry and Debbie Nelson of Cochrane, Alberta; stepson Tim Tindall of College Station; grandchildren Shane and Erin Nelson; Shanna and Michael Greene; Sharla Nelson; Nathan, Stephen, and Sophie Nelson; and Joseph Tindall; six great-grandchildren, and many dear nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Donations in Larry’s honor are greatly appreciated and can be made to the school where his son serves, The Canadian S. Baptist Seminary & College, at www.csbs.ca/donate .

Lastly, the family greatly appreciates the excellent care provided to Jim Larry by Guardian Home Health, CHI-St. Joseph Hospital. and St. Joseph Hospice Inpatient Clinic during his illness.

He will live on forever with the Lord and in the hearts and memories of his family and friends from a life well-lived.
