I had the pleasure of meeting Jan Swearingen at three or four academic conferences devoted to Scottish philosophy. She was a treasure: kind, witty, encouraging, and passionately intelligent. I will miss her.
My condolences to her family and friends,

Jan and I graduated from high school together and I knew her well. We haven't visited in many years, but as a grad of TAMU, I wish I had known she was a faculty member there so that I might have stopped in for a visit during one of my many trips back to A&M.

Jan was one of the most brilliant and kind people I've had the privilege of knowing. She was a beautiful woman in every way, an extraordinary mother and was respected and admired as a serious scholar and teacher, especially by my late husband Tony Hilfer, UT Professor of English and Plan II, who considered her one of his most cherished colleagues.
I'll always remember a New Year's Eve she spent with us and she sang numerous Gilbert & Sullivan melodies without music or printed words. Nobody could sing Gilbert & Sullivan like Jan! Sing on dear Jan and make the angels laugh.
With sympathy to Ben and to all Jan's extended family,

Everyone who knew Jan was blessed. The light and goodness she has shown the world is incalculable. Her students carry her insight, her courage, and honesty into their lives and the lives of those they touch. We were idealistic in the 1960s but she lived her idealism and never faltered. I was lucky to be her friend. You live in my heart Jan. Rest in Peace.

Remembering a dear, lovely friend with such easily recognized warm eyes.
I cherished our summer walks and talks in Princeton and Manhattan. I'm stunned and upset she left us so early. I'd really hoped she would spring back after diagnosed.
In deep sympathy and loving memory of sweet Jan.

Even though it has been many, many decades since I have seen Jan I can still remember a women who was kind and friendly and radiated serenity. My heart felt condolences to all who loved her.
I can image her facing this with great courage and maybe even joy with what was coming next.

Jan was a terrific colleague and friend with whom I shared many rewarding hours of conversation about her field, my interests, and above all, the wellbeing of a profession we both venerated and chafed against. I shall miss her very much and assume she is on some cloud or other correcting the abuses of English she might overhear in the idle talk of fellow angels, Paul
