Gaytha Edgar Boyett

Gaytha Viveene Boyett, of College Station, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2018 at the age of 78.

Gaytha was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She had an older sister and three older brothers. After living in New Mexico, Colorado, California, and Japan – where her parents adopted her two younger brothers - her family was transferred to College Station.

She met George Boyett during her junior year at A&M Consolidated High School. They were married in Texas A&M’s All Faiths Chapel in 1957. She subsequently graduated from high school in 1958. She accompanied George on several postings, including Germany, before returning and settling in College Station in 1964. Together they raised 3 children.

While raising her children, she stayed active in the community. She was involved with both the March of Dimes and the Muscular Dystrophy Association and participated in several fundraising drives on behalf of both organizations. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi, a national sorority focused on service.

As her children grew older, she was heavily involved in the Boy Scouts of America. She was frequently on the faculty at Philmont Scout Ranch, and also led multiple Wood Badge training courses. In recognition of her service, she was awarded the Silver Beaver, the highest form of recognition that a local council can bestow on a volunteer, by the Sam Houston Area Council in 1986.

Gaytha was also an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served the Church in varied capacities, including leading the Relief Society (women’s organization), the Young Women (teenagers), and the Primary (children aged 2-11). She also taught high schoolers in the Church’s early morning Seminary program for four years and mentored numerous young women.
More important than these activities, Gaytha will be remembered for what she did in the home. She was a wonderful mother and teacher to her children. She was an accomplished seamstress, cook, and always kept her home immaculately clean. She was also the primary caregiver for both her mother and her mother-in-law in their declining years. She will be remembered for her love and loyalty to family and friends.

Gaytha is survived by her two sons, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter.
