Evelyn Cooper 1938-2018

Our beautiful mother, Evelyn Atchison Cooper, passed away on an early Christmas morning. She was born in Oklahoma City, OK on June 27, 1938 to Burl and Esther Atchison. She and her siblings: Carm, Glenda, Herman, Lonnie, Jimmie and Lex grew up in Kashmere Gardens in Houston, Texas. Our mother faced many challenges in her life, but she learned to be strong from an early age. At a young age, she faced some medical issues. A doctor left the packing in her nose too long and it resulted in damaging cartilage, bone and tissue, that would eventually lead to many more surgeries to correct his mistake. But instead, it caused more damage while trying to reconstruct, and left a visible scar that she lived with all of her life. The scar for her was much deeper than that. She still remembers a little boy chasing her home from school every day saying, "Scar Nose," and her brother Herman beating him up every day as well. That scar would also build in her character and confidence that she would need throughout her life.

She attended Jeff Davis High School in Houston, and in her senior year, moved to Victoria, Texas, with her parents. She was a new student at a new school, and she was picked to sing a solo at her high school graduation. Our mother had a beautiful singing voice. Her children have fond memories of her singing in church every Sunday. She was raised in the Church of Christ all her life and her life was truly her sermon.

Evelyn was also a registered tribal member of the Cherokee Nation. Our mother wrote many poems throughout her life and about her life, her pain, her loss, her faith and her Lord. She later moved to College Station, Texas, to help in the care of her own mother. After her mother passed away, our mother then became the caregiver for our brother, Rip, and his children. She had already raised three children of her own, but without any hesitation, stepped into another parent role as a grandparent this time around. It wasn't until May 2017, when she suffered many falls and it became necessary for her to move back to Houston to be closer to her two daughters. She had a difficult time adjusting to leaving her life in College Station, her home, her friends and her grandchildren she raised, but after time, she adjusted very well…... so the journey began for all.

The family was blessed to find her a team of doctors that took very good care of her. Her days stayed busy with doctor's appointments, medications, and hospital stays in the 19 months she was in Houston, but she managed to also have many fun adventures along the way. The family shared many laughs and shared much love on this last part of her journey. She ate a lot of James Coney Island, KFC, Chick-fil-a, Big Daddy's Barbecue, Long John Silvers, Panera Bread and fried fish from her grandson Richard, on this journey. These were a few of Mom's favorite foods to eat on a regular basis. She became quite the celebrity at Methodist West Hospital with the nurses because she was there so frequently…….her children, not so much, because they were pretty demanding when it came to the best care and attention for their mother.

Evelyn loved going to thrift stores and Goodwill. She loved to read and work crosswords and puzzles, but as her health deteriorated, so did her vision, therefore those things she loved to do were not as easy any longer, especially reading her Bible which she missed dearly. She persevered like she has done all of her life and is the strongest person in her children’s eyes. She has withstood the winds, time and time again, has always turned the other cheek and is the kindest and most forgiving person her children have ever known. She will always be remembered for her strong faith, kindness and her servant heart. She fought so hard and so long to live. She loved her family and her great-grandbabies were her most precious treasures. These little humans brought her SO much joy. Her daughters are so thankful to have been with her before she passed as she gave the gift of opening up her beautiful green eyes to see her daughters one last time. She will always be loved, never forgotten, and missed deeply, but is rejoicing with the Lord. No more sorrow, No more pain.

You have fought the good fight, you have finished the course and you have kept the faith....<3
