Cherry Travelstead

Cherry Faye Travelstead

Cherry Faye Travelstead returned to Jesus' arms on Sunday, December 27, 2020, after a valiant battle with Alzheimer's. She and Jesus are sharing toasts with a cup of coffee remembering precious memories of her 83 years on Earth. Her devotion and firm belief in God supported her in the struggle and ultimately gave her peace.

Cherry was born to the late Mary Virginia Mann Fowler and Troy Fowler, a homemaker and sharecropper respectively on April 7, 1937, in Brilliant, Alabama. She married Leonard Travelstead on November 26, 1955. Cherry and Leonard lived in Haiti, Missouri, Texas City, Texas, and Dickinson, Texas before finally settling in Bryan, Texas.

Cherry was a hairdresser and owned a beauty shop in Texas City, Texas for many years. Later she would work at Service Merchandise in the jewelry section. This allowed her to make sure her grandchildren had the most desired Christmas toys that were hard to obtain. Cherry and Leonard were founding members of Christ's Way Baptist Church in Bryan, Texas. They were a part of the team who along with the Texas Baptist Men built the current church building. Cherry was instrumental in providing them with ample homemade banana pudding.

Cherry had a passion for Bible study and singing songs about God including Jesus Loves Me. She was a member of Christ's Way Baptist Church choir. She loved her garden and picking vegetables with her grandchildren. She especially loved roses. Cherry also loved cooking and antiquing. She especially loved cut crystal. Cherry took great pride in her appearance and always always made sure her hair was done up to the nines!

Cherry was blessed with a large family. She was the 5th out of 10 children. She is survived by her son DeWayne Travelstead and wife Chris of Westlake, Texas, daughter Lisa Klintworth and husband Gordon of Kurten, Texas, siblings Barbara Ann Blanchard and Larry Rondal Fowler and wife Sue, 10 grandchildren and their 7 spouses, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her husband Leonard Travelstead, son Jerry Lynn Travelstead, grandson Jason Pack, parents and siblings Emma Marie Faircloth, Clara Christine Lee, Troy Durrell Fowler, James Udell Fowler, Prentiss Franklin Fowler, Elizabeth Imogene Dyer and Billy Lewis Fowler.

Because of Covid-19 precautions, private family services will be celebrated with a Virtual Life Celebration available for viewing beginning at 11:55 am on Monday, January 11, 2020 at https://www.hillierfuneralhome.com/tributes/Cherry-Travelstead.
