Betty Gloff Hall

Betty Ann Gloff Hall passed away January 6, 2019 at the age of 77.

Betty was born December 26, 1941 in Clifton, Texas, to Robert and Irene Gloff. Her father worked in a grocery store, while her mother worked in a variety store and set the standard as a homemaker. Growing up with her brother Don and her sister Doris, Betty was a cute little freckle faced girl. On Sunday afternoons they used to climb in the old Chevy and cruise around on the gravel back roads for a drive. While Betty attended Clifton High, she worked at the local drug store manning the soda fountain. After graduation, she went on to attend North Texas State University in Denton, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in home economics. She taught home economics at West High School and at Celina High School.

Betty met the love of her life, Halbert Weldon Hall, at a funeral. They sat and talked a long time. The next week, he got a nail stuck in his foot, which caused him to have to make a trip to the drug store. The two stood around talking for so long that his mother called to inquire if he had died. The pair married at Clifton Presbyterian Church on December 27, 1963. In their fifty-five-year union the two were blessed with two daughters and six grandchildren. Betty loved her family dearly, and took time each birthday to make it a big deal. She used every holiday to make everyone feel special. She had a talent for loving each of her grandchildren as if they were the only one.

Although Betty enjoyed teaching home-economics her dream was to raise her children. She was the ultimate homemaker and mom to daughters Julia and Sarah. She was an amazing listener to all her daughters’ stories and excelled at sewing, crafts, and cooking. While her daughters were growing up, she was a part of the PTO and was often the classroom mom. Because she was known to be such a wonderful cook, and wanted to leave something special for her grandchildren, Betty gathered up her favorite recipes and had them published in a spiral bound cookbook. All of her children and grandchildren have a copy of the cookbook and have their favorites that they cook from the book. She could make anything, and was talented enough to make her daughters’ prom dresses. She was the ultimate “June Cleaver,” traveling, cooking, and even sometimes cleaning in full make-up and jewelry.

Betty developed adult onset type 1 diabetes in her 30s and had it for 38 years. Nothing about the disease was typical, and nothing was easy about her struggle, but she saw each year as a gift. Even though she had to keep adjusting her life as her struggles changed, Betty persevered and became even more gracious. She was always a classy lady, even after she could no longer wear her beloved high heels or eat her favorite Milky Ways. Through it all, she continued her coffee meeting with friend Kay Dowling, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. They met every Monday for decades.

Betty enjoyed helping others. She drove and cared for the elderly and loved to cook for those needing help. Betty was always taking people under her wing. Writing notes to encourage or comfort the people she knew was one of Betty’s great talents.

A founding member of Westminster Presbyterian, Betty had a very strong faith. She studied the Bible and lived out her faith through service to others and volunteering at her church. Betty was a member of the Red Hat Society and part of a coffee group that met Friday afternoons. Her trip to New England with Halbert to see the leaves was especially meaningful to her.

Betty leaves behind her beloved husband Halbert Weldon Hall, her daughter and son-in-law Julia and Chip Mundy of Roanoke, Texas, her daughter and son-in-law Sarah and Drew Howard of The Woodlands, her brother and sister-in-law Don and JoAnn Gloff of Clifton, Texas, her sister and brother-in-law Doris and Paul Haggard of North Carolina, her sister-in-law Edna Beckelhymer of Austin, her grandchildren Clark, Clara, Hope, Halle, Hudson, and Huxley, and numerous other family members and close friends.

To honor Betty’s life, her family has planned a visitation on Friday, January 11 from 6-8 PM at Hillier Funeral Home of Bryan. Her life celebration will be at 10 AM Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Westminster Presbyterian, with interment to take place at Clifton Cemetery at 3:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made in Betty’s honor to Hospice Brazos Valley, the American Diabetes Association, or Westminster Presbyterian Church.
