Veterans Services

“I was raised by a nation.

I was given food, shelter, and a bunk and that was all I needed to begin my journey.

Selflessness was instilled in me. Leadership was primed.

I left the military with so much more than I went in with.

The U.S. Navy made me who I am today.”

-Amanda Valenzuela Gittelman, Managing Partner

Veterans' Services

Which funeral-related expenses are covered by the VA?

For most veterans and retirees, the VA provides a gravesite in any of the national cemeteries, a government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate. In some instances, burial allowances may be available. All benefits are dependent upon proof of service, such as a discharge certificate or form DD214. If you or your loved one cannot locate military records, let us know. Whether you are planning in advance or it is your time of need, we have the resources to assist in locating those documents. For more information, let our staff help you or visit https://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records.

Nearest Veterans' Cemeteries:

Urns as well as caskets may be placed at a veteran cemetery. The nearest veteran cemeteries to Bryan / College Station are:

  • Houston National Cemetery, Houston
  • Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, Dallas
  • Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, Killeen

Placement in a national or state cemetery is on a first come, first served basis and cannot be arranged in advance. When the time comes, families need not worry about the arrangement of the cemetery. Simply provide the proof of military service and our staff will do the rest.

  • Bryan City Cemetery, Bryan

Bryan City Cemetery opened their veterans section in fall of 2020. This section is reserved only for veterans and their spouse and requires proof of service. Unlike state and national cemeteries, the gravesite in the veterans section of Bryan City Cemetery is not at no cost and fees will apply; however, these spaces may be purchased in advance. You may contact Bryan City Cemetery directly or ask our staff. We will gladly provide the guidance you need.

Military Funeral Honors

For countless fallen shipmates, Amanda stood reverently and granted the final salute. The significance of these honors is not unbeknownst to her. The staff at Hillier will assume the responsibility of coordinating a military honor guard to render the appropriate final military honors which may include a 21-gun salute, folding and presentation of the American flag, and the sounding of Taps.

How do I know if I am eligible?

To be eligible for military benefits, the service member must have been discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. Veteran spouses and dependent children may also be eligible for benefits. For further information on eligibility, call and speak with our helpful staff or visit https://www.va.gov/burials-memorials/eligibility/.

Military service is often a private chapter in the lives of those who served but that does not mean it is a chapter that should be overlooked. Let us know your service is important to you. Share with us your story and consider prearranging your services to ensure we are recognizing some of your most admirable days.

On behalf of Amanda and the entire staff of Hillier, thank you for your service and thank you for allowing us to serve you. Hooyah!
