Dr Winston Shearon

Dr. Winston T. Shearon – commonly known among friends and students as “Win” or “Dr. Shearon” – passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 16th, in his 79th year.

He is survived by his wife Priscilla, son Christopher, daughter-in-law Frances, and grandchildren Estelle and Ellie Mae.

Dr. Shearon was born and came of age in Raleigh, NC. where he earned degrees in both applied mathematics and engineering from North Carolina State University. He held positions at both General Motors and Corning Glass before furthering his education. After attaining a doctorate from the University of Virginia in 1975, he moved his family to College Station, Texas. He then served with distinction as a professor at the Texas A&M University Mays College of Business for over 37 years.

While in college in North Carolina, he met and married the love of his life, Priscilla Price. They had a son, Christopher, who was the joy of his life. They were also blessed with two beautiful granddaughters, Estelle and Ellie Mae, that brought him great joy and he loved them dearly.

Dr. Shearon loved his family and was a dedicated husband and father. He coached many of his son’s football, basketball, baseball, and soccer teams. Despite a busy schedule, he very rarely missed a chance to attend anything that Chris was participating in. Dr. Shearon demanded excellence in the classroom from his son and granddaughters. He both gave and expected a great deal. Disappointing him was never an option.

On the lighter side, he was quite accomplished at good-natured teasing, pranks, practical jokes, sarcasm and general mischief and was also a particularly good sport when on the receiving end of the same. There was rarely a minute without a laugh or a smile as well as the occasional “absentminded professor” moment – which brought great joy and amusement to those who knew and loved him.

The grandchildren, whom affectionately refer to him as “Grumpy”, spent countless hours within a continuous context of love and humor. “Grumpy” was well known for producing $100 bills out of thin air for birthdays, outstanding report cards, and other notable achievements. Apparently, there was a significant change in policy, reward denomination, and frequency in the time between his role as parent and grandparent…

At Texas A&M, Dr. Shearon was the recipient of multiple awards and appointments including the Price Waterhouse Teaching Excellence Professorship, the Outstanding Teacher Award for the College of Business, and the Ernst & Young Professorship of Accounting. Under his leadership, the Texas A&M MBA program was restructured, gained national recognition, and delivered winning performances against teams from other top Universities in national MBA case competitions. His work and studies took him around the world, studying in Europe and leading multiple student trips to India and Asia.

Golf was a big part of Win’s life. Many an hour were spent on the course with his son and friends. He loved the game, had two career holes-in-one, and was part of many tournament-winning teams. Among the most cherished of his many golf memories was a trip to the Masters. Teasing and humor were pervasive on the golf course as well. He routinely dished out and provided inspiration for nearly infinite amounts of both. This sometimes included his signature “club toss” – often done more for the amusement of others than as a way of expressing his genuine disappointment in the inability of a golf ball to follow directions.

Dr. Shearon chose to express his faith largely in the form of actions rather than words – this was evident on a daily basis as he truly “lived it.” He led, loved, served, and lived by example, and his family could not be prouder of his time on earth.

A visitation will be held at Hillier Funeral Home of College Station on Friday, February 22, 2019 from 5-8 PM. At a later time, a private family service will be held at the City of College Station Memorial Cemetery and Dr. Shearon’s remains will be placed in the Aggie Field of Honor Columbarium.
