Once we learned that you were ours,
we already knew you:
your tiny smiles in the sun
and soft sighs as you lay between us—
warm in your dreams,
perfect in ours.

We heard the beat of your heart, soft as a butterfly's wings.
Closing our eyes, we imagined the curve of your tiny hands,
nearly savored the sweet scent of your hair,
the weight of you, safely in our arms—
a momentary peace
that passed understanding.

Who could have guessed the weight of such tiny footprints on our hearts?

Then, just as the sun warms each butterfly's wings,
and sends it flickering into flight,
so we watched the delicate spark of your soul pass from our arms
into Our Savior's,
securely held for another day
when our family will finally be complete.

Until then, Juan,
though you were lost, you are deeply loved:
held in our broken hearts,
bound up by faith.
For surely as there is a Risen Son,
we will meet again.
