Johnny Vernon Hartsfield

Johnny V. Hartsfield, 82, of Bryan, passed peacefully at his home on Saturday, July 3, 2021, with his loving family surrounding him as he entered God's kingdom. A visitation will be held for him on Thursday, July 8, 2021, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, with a Rosary to be prayed at 7 pm that night, at Hillier of BRYAN. We will continue to honor and celebrate Johnny's life on Friday, July 9, 2021 at 3:00 pm for his Celebration of Life service at the funeral home.

Johnny was born on November 21, 1938, in Bryan, Texas, to his parents, J.C. and Zula Hartsfield. He grew up in Steep Hollow in Brazos County as an active member in FFA. Johnny enlisted in the National Guard in the Army. He was a US Classification Rifle cal 30 M-1 Marksman and carbine expert. He also served as an SP4 Air Compressor Operator from 1956-59. Before Johnny began his career at Texas A&M University, he drove 18 wheelers for Alenco. While at Texas A&M, he started out as a bus driver, then transferred to Heavy Equipment with TAMU. He was the crane operator when the "stack" fell. Johnny earned numerous safety awards during his 32-year career at Texas A&M.

Johnny met the love of his life, Doris, at a softball game. Doris was playing, and Johnny was the umpire. They fell in love, married, and enjoyed 61 beautiful years together. The day they married was one of Johnny's fondest memories. They had two children together, Dennis and Cindy, who they loved effortlessly. Johnny loved his family more than anything. They would go on family vacations every summer. Johnny taught his son how to work on vehicles and he taught his daughter the value of hard work, and taught them both the importance of family. Johnny always loved spending time with his family; he loved all of them so much.
Johnny had a knack for building and fixing things. He had a passion for learning how to fix or build anything! He once built a hydraulic log splitter that his family has used for years. He would help anyone in need, he was called "911 Vern" by neighbors, and was always wanting to be of help. He enjoyed fishing, loved to bar-b-q for his family and friends, and always knew how to fix it! Johnny will be remembered by many as loving, caring, and an honest man.

Johnny will be remembered by his wife, Doris Marie Hartsfield; children, Dennis Hartsfield and wife Eloisa, and Cindy Hartsfield and husband Lenney. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Kaycee Sims and husband Drew, Chelsea Davis, Tucker Moore, Nathan Hartsfield, and step-granddaughter, Heather Shaffer and spouse Nisa; great-grandchildren, Amelia Bree Sims, Lindsay Shaffer, and Riley Jack Shaffer.

Johnny will be reunited with his parents, J.C. and Zula Hartsfield; brother, Norman Hartsfield; and brother, Virgil Hartsfield.

Johnny's family would like to acknowledge the Brazos Valley Hospice group. Everyone was so kind and caring to Johnny. They always asked Doris how she was doing, and truly showed compassion. Thank you!
