Robert Martin Smith passed away November 20, 2017 at the age of 90.

Robert was born August 14, 1927 in El Paso, Texas to Charles J. and Addie May (Black) Smith. As an only child, Robert grew up in San Antonio during the Great Depression. He graduated from Breckenridge High School in San Antonio. He was drafted into the Army at the end of World War II, and then joined the Air Force, where he quickly rose in the ranks to Sergeant. He received his Bachelor’s of Science degree from Harding College in Arkansas, his Masters of Science degree in chemistry from the University of Texas, and then attended Texas A&M for his doctorate.

Robert met the love of his life, Billie Jean Anderson at church. The two were married July 7, 1956 and were blessed with three children during their 61 years. He taught Chemistry at Odessa Junior College in Texas, York College in York, Nebraska, Abilene Christian College in Texas, Harding College in Arkansas, and Texas A&M University in Texas. He retired from TAMU doing the research he loved to do.

He lived a life of deep faith and attended Central Church of Christ.

Robert leaves behind his wife Billie Jean Smith, his son Bryan Michael Smith of Bryan, his daughter and son-in-law Bonna Melissa and Eric Ashley of Hohenwald, Tennessee, his daughter and son-in-law Rebecca Melinda and Enrique Fortin of College Station, his grandchildren Amber, Andrew, Karl, Corwin, and Troy, and his great-grandchildren River and Eli. He will be missed.
To honor Robert’s memory, a visitation will be held at Hillier Funeral Home of Bryan on Monday November 27, 2017 from 5-7PM. His funeral service will be Tuesday, November 28 at Central Church of Christ. Burial will be Wednesday, November 29 at 1 PM at Sunset Memorial Park in San Antonio.
