Patsy Foster Schaffhauser, 84, passed away Friday, September 8, 2017 at her home in Steep Hollow.
Patsy was born January 17, 1933, in the Steep Hollow Community in Bryan, Texas, to Roy Lee and Inez (Hopkins) Foster. She graduated from SFA High School in Bryan and then went on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree from Sam Houston (Texas A&M did not yet allow women). Before her marriage, she worked as a home economics specialist for the Texas Department of Agriculture. She had her own radio show and judged food shows and events around the state.
For over 61 years, Patsy was married to the love of her life, Lt. Col. Carl N. Schaffhauser (now retired from the US Air Force). They were blessed with two daughters, Karla and Kathy. Patsy was the ultimate military wife for over 20 years. She moved all over the country as the Air Force reassigned Carl. She always brought her kids home to Texas in the summers and kept her family close no matter where they were stationed.
After Carl’s retirement from the Air Force, they returned to Steep Hollow in Bryan. Patsy taught English at Allen Academy for years.  She had a special place in her heart for all the boys who boarded on campus and were far from their homes.  She loved them dearly, and they called her “Momma Schaff.”
Patsy was an avid reader, Bridge player, and Shanghai player. She loved traveling with her family and her friends as well as cooking and sewing.  No one could out cook her!  She was a master artist and scientist in the kitchen, never turning out a bad dish.  She was also an amazing seamstress.  The inside of the clothes she made looked as good as the outside. Her grandkids were sure she could fix any tear they could make in their clothes. They could always count on Nana to listen to their problems and give great advice. She was the rock the whole family could always count on.
After suffering a stroke in November 2011, Patsy continued to play Shanghai with friends and family. The stroke robbed her of her speech, and limited her mobility; therefore, she took to playing solitaire on her iPad every day. She loved sitting in the fresh air with her dogs and having visitors. She especially enjoyed time with her family.
Patsy was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend. When she passed she was reunited with her parents, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends. She is sure to be laughing and talking with them now in heaven. Patsy’s laugh was infectious! She leaves behind her husband, Lt. Col. Carl N. Schaffhauser, her daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Greg Barker, her daughter and son-in-law Karla and Parten Wakefield, her granddaughter Jamie Schkade and her husband Robb, her grandson Justin Barker and his wife Megan, and her grandson Jason Barker and his wife Kristen. She will also be missed by her great-grandchildren Shelby Barker and Lane Barker, her sisters Betty Sue Morehead and Naomi Goodlett, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She loved them all. She was also grateful for her special “angels,” Mary Sereseroz and Tina Locke who helped make Patsy’s final days, weeks, and months comfortable.
A Celebration of Patsy’s Life will begin with a visitation on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at Hillier Funeral Home of Bryan from 2:30 - 4:00 PM with a service to begin at 4 PM. Interment will follow at Steep Hollow Cemetery.
