Patricia was born in Ft. Worth and grew up in Smithfield, TX. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in English from North Texas State University. She was later awarded a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from Texas A&M University, Class of '82. She raised her two children in Bryan, TX with her former husband and dear friend, Charles Edwin “Ed” Harris. She spent the last part of her life with her beloved husband and constant companion George H. Watkins, Jr. Texas A&M Class of '57 and enjoyed living out her retirement years in Iola, TX.
She was a passionate educator, and taught in many capacities for over 40 years. Most of her career was spent with the English Language Institute at A & M, teaching English as a second language. She was known for her high intelligence, wide knowledge of languages and a caring understanding of the difficulties students from many cultures had in learning English. Pat amazed us all with her knowledge in so many areas, from British history to world literature and mythology, which was augmented by her voracious love of reading all throughout her life. She led a deeply spiritual life. She served in numerous roles in the Episcopal Church and had an immense knowledge of religion. She had a particular interest and passion for the spirituality of her own Native American ancestry that she integrated with her Christian faith. She co-authored “She Who Prays: A Woman’s Interfaith Prayer Book” that was published in 2005 and received certification to be a spiritual director. She taught workshops on many topics including dream interpretation and served as a lay spiritual director to many people, including one who became an Episcopal Bishop.
She possessed a unique combination of toughness and compassion. She was known for her hearty laugh and sharp wit, always making those around her feel joyful.
Pat’s greatest passion and energy was devoted to motherhood and raising and mentoring her two children, Charlie and Alison, who adored her. She was a highly devoted and caring mother and grandmother, known affectionately as “Mama Bear,” and had the special ability to make everyone around her feel loved unconditionally.
