Mary Elizabeth Leland

Mary Elizabeth Leland, 89, of College Station, Texas, passed from this life on Sunday, March 26, 2017.

Mary’s life was spent in service to others. She was born on November 23rd, 1927 in Houston, Texas and grew up in College Station where she lived on the A&M campus for part of her childhood. Mary inspired students throughout her 30-year career during which she taught math at her alma mater, A&M Consolidated High School, and sponsored the swim team, chess club, and bowling club. After her retirement, she continued teaching math, violin, and viola at her home for several years. She was a fantastic musician and a member of the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra. She also founded the Brazos Valley String Quartet. Mary spent many Christmas Eves playing in the services at St. Thomas Episcopal Church. She loved music, animals, traveling, and her family, which not only consisted of relatives but also included her students, swimmers, and friends. She was her happiest when in service to others and around the people she loved. Mary will be missed by many.

Mary was preceded in death by her sons Tom and Bill Leland. She is survived by her son: Bob Leland and his wife Mia; daughters-in-law: JoAnn Leland and Twyla Leland; grandchildren: Kacie Street and her husband Joshua, Eli Leland, David Leland, Brad Leland and his wife Maddy, Jenna Leland, Eric Leland and several great grandchildren.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at Hillier Funeral Home in College Station on Sunday, April 2nd at 2:00pm with a reception in the Heritage Room following services.
