Louan W. Lay

Louan Williams Lay, age 82, went to be with her Lord and Savior on December 5, 2017 peacefully at her home with her husband and hospice care by her side after battling diabetes for over 25 years.

Louan was born on October 12, 1935 in Gorman, Texas to Luther Fowler and Iva Vivian (Tate) Williams. She moved to Stephenville, TX during middle school and graduated from Stephenville High School in 1954. It was there she met Bobby Gene Lay, her high school sweetheart. They were engaged during the spring of her senior year before Bobby went to serve in the United States Army in Japan during the Korean Conflict. After Bobby was discharged from the army, they were married on May 18, 1956 at her home in Stephenville. The ceremony was performed by Telefus Cawyer, who married all four of the Lay brothers.

After graduating from Stephenville High School, Louan went on to receive her LVN license from Stephenville Hospital. She worked as an LVN to help get Bobby through his engineering degree at Texas A&M. Once their daughter Linda Diane was born, Louan became a full time homemaker. In 1961, after graduating from Texas A&M, Bobby and Louan moved to Wichita Falls, Texas. There Tammye Louise and Todd Alan were born and their family was complete. She enjoyed their family vacations at the coast and camping in the mountains of Oklahoma and New Mexico. Louan also loved spending time with Bobby at his traffic engineering conventions. Louan was a creative person who was gifted at floral design, crafting, and was an accomplished seamstress.

She accepted Jesus as her savior during a revival when she was in the sixth grade. She and Bobby were later baptized during the same service at Trinity Baptist Church in Wichita Falls in 1963. She loved singing and worshiping through music. While living in Wichita Falls, Louan was involved in church choirs at both Sunnyside Baptist and First Baptist Church. In 1974, Louan and her family moved to Austin, TX. There she was involved with the choir and in youth activities at Hyde Park Baptist Church. After retirement, she and Bobby returned to College Station in 1999. They joined First Baptist Church of Bryan where she was active in the senior adult ministry. She enjoyed singing in the senior adult choir, traveling, playing dominoes, and games with her senior friends. At each church, she enjoyed serving on various committees and fellowshipping with friends.

Louan was an avid Aggie fan. She and Bobby enjoyed attending Aggie sporting events together. Football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball teams could all count on their support.
Louan was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Pat Williams Dove of North Carolina. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 61 years, Bobby Gene Lay, her daughter and son-in-law Diane and Jay Caton of Frisco, her daughter and son-in-law Tammye and Mark York of Plano, her son and daughter-in-law Todd and Diane Lay of Plano, and her grandchildren Lauren Caton, Heather Caton, Brooks Caton, Ryan and Lindsay York Maloney, Abbey York, Ryan York, and Celeste Lay. She will be deeply missed at their family gatherings.
The family would like to thank Compassionate Care Hospice for their wonderful care of Louan and their family over the past several months.

To honor Louan’s life, there will be a visitation on Saturday, December 9 from 1-2:30 at Hillier Funeral Home of College Station, with a funeral service to follow at 2:30, also at Hillier Funeral Home of College Station.
