Jack Edward Hoeny

Always confident in his considered opinions, our beloved brother, uncle and friend, Jack Hoeny, died Sunday, March 19, 2017. He was 64 years old.
Born in Port Arthur, TX (Jefferson County) on March 2, 1953, Jack was the son of James Clifford Hoeny, Jr. and Verna Marie Mouton Hoeny. His father owned a filling station there while his mother was a homemaker; later, Mr. Hoeny would operate the Holiday Inns in Brazos County. Jack was one of three children, including his sister, Margaret Hoeny Spillar (husband John, of Houston), and his brother, James Clifford Hoeny III (wife Nina, of Tomball). Theirs was a happy childhood, and Jack was at the center of everything, a natural entertainer and class clown. A daredevil from the beginning, Jack had an open account at a hobby store and loved to tinker with radio controlled (RC) airplanes; in his spare time, he raced go-carts until he bought his own Harley motorcycle. To raise money for his expensive hobbies, Jack went crabbing and even cleaned duck kills for his father’s patrons. When he wasn’t racing or bass fishing, Jack often caddied and golfed at Bryan Municipal Golf Course and played on the Bryan High Golf Team. A lifelong student of Bryan ISD—attending Sul Ross Elementary, Lamar Junior High and Bryan High—Jack graduated in 1971.
As to his personality, Jack had an extra measure of bravado. He was brash and outspoken, opinionated yet also sensitive. He was the quintessential good guy, with a love for children—especially his nieces and nephews—and his parents, for whom he cared greatly. Honest to a fault, Jack was never afraid to say exactly how he felt, whether addressing family, friends or his deep faith in God. Indeed, Jack believed in those who likewise believed in him.
In terms of his working life, Jack dedicated himself to the United States Postal Service, beginning at the post office location in downtown Bryan before he moved to the Main Office on William Joel Bryan Parkway. Thirty-five years after he started, Jack retired, marking the happiest day of his life. On that day, Jack felt he had finally earned what he had always wanted: a simple life, filled with things that could be enjoyed right here in Bryan, where even a trip to College Station meant pushing his boundaries. He was a member of the Madison County Gun & Archery Club and enjoyed woodworking, fishing, golfing and flying RC aircraft, along with listening to music—particularly with a country twang. He collected all things related to his favorite hobbies, loved Marie Calendar’s key lime pie and his favorite plaid shirts, as well as eating anything that had been barbecued. His favorite companions were his beloved nieces and nephews and his loyal Heinz 57 buddies—his dogs Wally (now deceased) and Marshall.
Missing Jack most now are his sisters and brothers-in-law (Margaret & John Spillar, James and Nina Hoeny) and especially their children: Steven & Angie Spillar (of Spring), Charlie & Elizabeth Spillar (of Clearlake) and Rachelle & Justin Oneacre (of Houston). Jack was predeceased by his parents and his beloved dog, Wally.
